New Zealand have registered two wins from their three games in the T20 World Cup 2026. They desperately need a win in their last Group D game to qualify for the Super 8s and the luck is also on their side. The BlackCaps will face minnows Canada in their last group fixture in Chennai on Tuesday morning. With two back-to-back losses, Canada are almost knocked out of the race to qualify for the Super 8s and only a miracle can save their campaign in this World Cup.
New Zealand arrive in this fixture after facing a defeat against South Africa on Valentine's Day. Batting first, Kiwis scored 175/7 on the back of some crucial knocks by Mark Chapman, Finn Allen and Daryl Mitchell. The side fell short by 15-20 runs, thanks to a brilliant fast bowling spell by Marco Jansen. In reply, South African batters hammered the Kiwis and chased down the target inside 18 overs and won the game by seven wickets. Proteas skipper Aiden Markram led from the front by scoring an unbeaten 86. BlackCaps seamer Jacob Duffy conceded 50 runs in three overs.
Kiwi opener Tim Seifert is among the leading run scorers of this WC with 167 from three innings. BlackCaps batters have performed but their bowling remains a concern. It was evident in the T20I series against India, too, before the WC. They will definitely make some changes in their bowling attack in this deciding game.
One will be a forced change as pacer Lockie Ferguson has returned to New Zealand for a few days due to the birth of his first child. In his absence, Kyle Jamieson is likely to be fielded for the Canada game.
Canada come in this game after facing a five-wicket loss at the hands of UAE. Batting first, Canada scored 150/7 on the back of a fifty from Harsh Thaker. In reply, Canada has their moments but they failed to stop UAE, who chased down the target in the final over. A special mention should go to the veteran 39-year-old spinner, Saad Bin Zafar, who took 3/14 and almost won the game for the Canadians.
New Zealand (4th ranked) and Canada (19th ranked) have never played a T20I against each other. This will be their first meeting in this format. However, both sides have played three ODIs against each other and all of them took place across three ODI World Cups (2003, 2007 and 2011).
It is worth mentioning that New Zealand batter Mark Chapman has played a T20 against Canada in 2013 but back then, he used to represent Hong Kong.
