Ireland - 4

Oman - 2
Preview by Mohammad Anab

In March 2016, it was the T20 World Cup of that year when Oman made their debut in the multi-nation tournament and the Gulf side got immediate success as they defeated Ireland by two wickets in a nail-biting thriller. It was the first time that both sides were playing a T20I against each other.

Since then, Oman hasn't met the Irishmen in the global tournament. However, both sides will meet again on Saturday morning in Colombo in a Group B clash of the T20 WC 2026.

But this time, Oman are not that confident. They arrive into this fixture after suffering two back-to-back heavy defeats. After losing to Zimbabwe by eight wickets, Oman faced Sri Lanka and were defeated by a massive margin of 105 runs. Sri Lanka batted first and scored a massive 225/5 on the back of fifties from Kusal Mendis, Pavan Rathnayake and skipper Dasun Shanaka.

In reply, Oman could manage only 120/9 in their 20 overs. Though middle-order batter Mohammad Nadeem scored an unbeaten half-century but rest it wasn't enough to save Oman from consecutive defeats in this WC.

Oman will desperately want their senior players like skipper Jatinder Singh and opener Aamir Kaleem to perform, as both of them were part of the side that defeated Ireland in 2016.

Ireland also come into this fixture after facing two back-to-back losses but they were not by a huge margin like those of Oman. However, the side is going through other problems as well. Skipper Paul Stirling injured his knee in the last game against Australia and has now been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament. Uncapped batter Sam Topping has been named as his replacement and Lorcan Tucker will lead the side in Stirling's absence.

Also, it will be interesting to see who will open the batting for Ireland in Stirling's absence.

In their last game against Australia, the side lost by 67 runs. Chasing Australia's score of 182/6, Ireland were bundled out for just 115 runs inside 17 overs. Only George Dockrell, who is also the third most capped player in T20Is across the globe, made an impact for Ireland in that game by scoring 41 off 29 balls and picking up one wicket with the ball.

A major reason for Ireland's loss was also their poor fielding. The side dropped numerous catches in that game.

Despite that 2016 T20 WC loss, Ireland have an upper hand against Oman, when it comes to head-to-head in T20Is. Both sides have met six times and Ireland have won four of those games. Since 2019, Oman hasn't defeated Ireland in T20Is.
