Canada and the United Arab Emirates will lock horns in a high-stakes Group D encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Friday, with both associate nations desperate to keep their tournament hopes alive. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, the afternoon contest carries added significance as each side looks to recover from difficult starts and rediscover momentum on cricket’s grandest stage.
Canada arrive into this fixture after suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of South Africa. Batting first, Proteas scored a massive score of 213/4 on the back of a half-century from skipper Aiden Markram and useful contributions from Tristan Stubbs, David Miller and Ryan Rickelton. For Canada, it was only their wrist-spinner Ansh Patel, who made an impact by picking up three scalps. The side was guilty of 17 extras in its innings.
In reply, Canada never looked in a position to chase down the total and could manage only 156/8 in their 20 overs. Apart from Navneet Dhaliwal (64) and Harsh Thaker (33), no Canadian batter managed to make an impact as they struggled against the Proteas pacers. Ultimately, Canada lost the game by 57 runs.
UAE also come into this fixture after suffering a heavy loss. In their first match against New Zealand, the UAE batted first and scored a more than decent score of 175/6. Skipper Muhammad Waseem and Alishan Sharafu had a second-wicket stand of 107 runs. Both of them also made a half-century each.
However, no one knew that the Kiwi openers would give no chance to the opposition. Openers Tim Seifert (89*) and Finn Allen (84*) completed the chase inside 16 overs and handed their side a 10-wicket victory. The 175-run stand between Seifert and Allen was the highest partnership for any wicket, by any side, in the T20 World Cup history.
Notably, UAE batter Mohammed Zohaib was sent back home on "disciplinary grounds" before the match against BlackCaps. Keeper-batter Syed Haider Shah has now been added to the squad as Zohaib's replacement.
A defeat for any side in this game will mean an almost end to their hopes of advancing to the Super 8 stage.
Notably, Canada won eight T20Is in a row in the lead-up to this T20 World Cup, their longest winning streak in this format. However, Canada have faced UAE only once in T20Is, back in October 2019, and in that game, it was the Gulf nation that secured a victory by 14 runs.

Squad Update:
UAE keeper-batter Syed Haider Shah has been announced as the replacement of Mohammed Zohaib, who was sent back home on "disciplinary grounds".
