When the fixtures for the 10th edition of the T20 World Cup were announced, Indian fans were hoping to shatter records in the first couple of games and build momentum for the mega showdown against Pakistan. However, the opening game against the USA — and the build-up to the second — has been nothing short of a nightmare. India had to huff and puff against the USA to get over the line and have now possibly lost both their opening batters ahead of their second game.
India’s second game is against Namibia as the Men in Blue travel to Delhi, with the Arun Jaitley Stadium set to host the 18th match of the competition. It is a Group A clash and will be played on Thursday (February 12).
India’s preparations, however, have been disrupted. Abhishek Sharma was admitted to the hospital due to a stomach issue, while Ishan Kishan was struck by a Jasprit Bumrah yorker on the eve of the contest.
Abhishek was discharged on the eve of the contest, while Kishan resumed batting after receiving treatment from the physio. India's assistant coach has mentioned that if Bumrah is fit, unfortunately, Mohammed Siraj will have to make way for him but on surfaces where they feel three seamers are needed, he will be in contention. The Men in Blue would not want to push Abhishek too early and if needed, even give rest to Ishan Kishan.
In their last game, India were in all sorts of trouble against the USA as they were reduced to 77/6 after being sent in by Monank Patel’s side.
If not for Suryakumar Yadav’s gritty half-century, India would have been under immense pressure. He remained unbeaten on 84 off 49. Ishan Kishan (20), Tilak Varma (25) and Axar Patel (14) were the other batters to reach double figures as India recovered to post 161/9 in 20 overs.
In reply, Mohammed Siraj picked up three wickets and was the pick of the bowlers. Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel claimed two wickets apiece, while Varun Chakaravarthy chipped in with one to restrict the USA to 132/8.
On the other hand, Namibia went down to the Netherlands. Batting first, they posted 156/8 in their 20 overs. Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton top-scored with 42 off 38, while Jan Frylinck made 30 off 26. Gerhard Erasmus (18) and JJ Smit (22) were the other notable contributors.
With the ball, Bernard Scholtz, Ruben Trumpelmann and Loftie-Eaton picked up a wicket apiece, but it wasn’t enough as the Netherlands got over the line with two overs to spare.
