A couple of Super Overs kick-started Day 5 of the T20 World Cup 2026 as South Africa and Afghanistan put on a show in Ahmedabad. The Proteas edged out Afghan Atalans in the second Super Over to get two points in the bag. Australia then brushed aside Ireland to get their campaign up and running despite injury scares in Colombo. West Indies later reminded the world of their pedigree in the shortest format, outbatting England on a batting-friendly surface in Mumbai.
The action doesn’t stop. Three more games are coming your way tomorrow. Sri Lanka face Oman in the first match of the day, before two associate nations battle it out for their first win at this stage of the tournament as Italy take on Nepal. The caravan then moves to Delhi, where India lock horns with Namibia.
For now, that’s all from us. This is Ajay Pal Singh signing off on behalf of Darpan Tikiya, Dev Rajawat, Zeeshan Naiyer and Aman. Thanks for joining us, and good night!
Shai Hope (West Indies captain): "Just happy that we got over the line. Guys have been playing some good cricket in patches. We got more of a complete game tonight. Two games up. That's where we wanted to be in the table.
(On Roston Chase) As I said pre-match, he is versatile. He is one you can depend on in more situations. He can come up with the bat and stabilise the innings. Then, he can get crucial wickets with the ball in the middle. We promoted him because we wanted him to stabilise the innings.
(On the power-hitting from Rutherford and the rest) These guys have been playing well for the last couple of months. Sherfane (Rutherford) has been exceptional in the last few series. It was good to see one of the batters put his hand up and going big. The openers have not fired yet, but it is coming. We will have to put our hands up.
(No dew tonight?) It is something that happens quite a lot here. The ball gets crazy wet. Tonight, it was wet, but not as wet. It goes to show that you can still defend runs if you bat first. Some good work from the spinners.
(On Motie's new variations) When you get some time off, you need to work on your game and elevate it. He has shown his class at the world stage. He has brought something new to his game and it is working well for us."
Harry Brook (England Captain):(On the defeat and West Indies’ performance) “It’s never nice to lose, but full credit to West Indies - they were outstanding. Everyone knows the power they have in their batting. If you’re even slightly off your line or length, they have the ability to clear the ropes consistently.
(On assessing the target at the halfway stage) At the halfway mark, we felt the total was definitely chaseable. The pitch didn’t behave quite as we expected. We thought there might be a bit more grip for the spinners, but it seemed to slide on more than anticipated. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite go our way tonight.
(On reflections after the game) We’ll go back, reflect on the game, and identify areas where we could have been better. That’s part of tournament cricket, and we’ll look to improve moving forward.
(On confidence ahead of the remaining matches) We absolutely have to stay confident. Confidence is crucial in this format. Thankfully, we got the win against Nepal the other night, which keeps us in a good position. Now the focus shifts to the next games against Scotland and Italy. We’ll do our homework, get back to basics, and prepare as well as we can.”
Sherfane Rutherford (Player of the Match): "First of all, I wanted to thank god for this opportunity of playing at the biggest stage. (On his injury) My finger is good. Hopefully, will be better for the next game.
(Challenges that they faced) One of the biggest challenge was Adil Rashid. In our meeting, (we discussed him), we knew he was going to be the toughest bowler for us. What was important for me was to try and keep him out of the game and try and score of him. (If not,) try and rotate strike and back ourselves to make up in the end.
(Preparations and confidence coming into this match) For me, I have been putting in a lot of work coming into the World Cup. For me, it is about I trust my process and read the situation Once I am in, I can always score. It was about having a clear mind and play with intent.
(Did 196 feel enough?) For me, we were 10 runs behind. England have a lot of power in their batting. The guys stood up well and bowled well. Credit to them.
(About Guyanese guys — him, Hetmyer and Shepherd — doing well) It is good for our country, our country is coming into spotlight. But cricket is a team game. It about getting better as a collective unit.
(On the road ahead) On the big stage, you want to have momentum. It is about getting better, adding 10% to our game. Hopefully, we can keep getting better."
Player of the Match: Sherfane Rutherford.

10:38 PM IST, Local Time: West Indies make it three in three against England in India at T20 World Cups, outclassing them by 30 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Men in Maroon had never lost while defending a target of 190-plus in the shortest format of the game, and they kept that streak intact by bowling England out for 166. This is West Indies’ sixth win in eight T20 World Cup meetings against England. The spinners turned the game in their favour as Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase spun a web around the England batters, and the 2022 T20 World Cup champions had no answers.
Earlier in the game, England won the toss and opted to bowl. The openers fell cheaply as Shai Hope failed to trouble the scorers and Brandon King was dismissed for one. Sherfane Rutherford top-scored with a brisk 76 off 42.
Roston Chase chipped in with a handy 34 off 29, while Shimron Hetmyer struck 23 off 12. Jason Holder then provided the finishing touches with a cameo of 33 off 17.
Jamie Overton and Adil Rashid picked up two wickets apiece, while Jofra Archer and Sam Curran claimed one each.
In reply, Jos Buttler and Phil Salt gave England a flying start, adding 38 runs in just 3.2 overs before Salt perished for 30 off 14. Buttler made 21 off 14 but was dismissed by Chase. Jacob Bethell looked promising during his stay at the crease, but Gudakesh Motie cleaned him up to trigger a collapse.
Harry Brook scored 17 and added 41 for the fifth wicket with Curran. Once he fell, England kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bowled out for 166. Curran remained unbeaten on 43, but with little support at the other end, England fell 30 runs short.
Motie was the pick of the bowlers for the West Indies, taking 3 for 33. Roston Chase got two, while Akeal Hosein, Romario Shepherd and Shamar Joseph picked up one each to give the West Indies a comfortable win.
