Match number 12 of the 10th edition of the T20 World Cup carries plenty of history with it. Pakistan and the USA have met only once before in the shortest format, and that encounter came in the previous edition of the tournament. On that occasion, the USA shocked the cricketing fraternity, stunning the 2009 T20 World Cup champions with a thrilling Super Over victory. The two teams are back again and will face each other at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo on Tuesday (February 10).

The wounds from that defeat would still be fresh for Pakistan, as they were eliminated from the group stage because of that loss. The USA and India went through to the Super 8s from Group A.

The USA come to Sri Lanka after giving the co-hosts, India, a scare. They had the Men in Blue in all sorts of trouble, reducing them to 77/6. If it wasn’t for Suryakumar Yadav’s outstanding knock, the USA would have caused an upset for the ages.

They suffered a couple of injury blows as well in their campaign opener against India. Ali Khan (groin) and Shubham Ranjane (hamstring) picked up injuries, with the former walking off the field.

Shadley van Schalkwyk bowled a magical spell of four overs. He took four wickets and gave away only 25 runs. Harmeet Singh picked up two wickets, while a wicket apiece for Ali Khan and Mohammad Mohsin restricted India to 161/9.

The USA started poorly in the run chase, but Milind Kumar and Sanjay Krishnamurthi added 58 runs for the fourth wicket.

Milind fell for 34, while Sanjay Krishnamurthi and Shubham Ranjane — who was hobbling on one knee but still managed to hit a few lusty blows off Mohammed Siraj and Hardik Pandya — made 37 each. None of the other batters got into double figures as the USA could only manage 132/8, falling 29 runs short.

On the other hand, Pakistan survived a scare against the Netherlands in their campaign opener. If not for Faheem Ashraf’s individual brilliance, they would have suffered another upset at the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan bowled first against the Netherlands and bowled the Dutch out for 147. Salman Mirza picked up three wickets, while the spin trio of Mohammad Nawaz, Saim Ayub and Abrar Ahmed got two wickets each. Shaheen Afridi chipped in with a wicket as well.

In reply, the Men in Green lost two wickets inside the Powerplay as Saim Ayub (24 off 13) and Salman Ali Agha (12 off 8) were dismissed.

Sahibzada Farhan and Babar Azam put on a 45-run stand for the third wicket. Farhan fell for 47 off 31, but Babar took 18 deliveries to score 15. The slow knock put pressure on Pakistan, and they were struggling until the 18th over.

Pakistan needed 29 off 12 when Logan van Beek was taken for 24 runs by Faheem Ashraf. With just five runs left in the final over, Pakistan closed out the chase with three balls to spare.

Can Pakistan avenge the defeat from last year’s World Cup, or will the USA get the better of the Men in Green once again? To find out, tune in at 6:00 PM IST, Local Time.
