Player of the Match: Amy Jones
12:28 PM IST, 5:58 PM Local Time: Thatโs it. Melbourne Stars Women move to the second spot in the points table with a convincing win over Hobart Hurricanes Women. They beat the Hurricanes Women by 37 runs. The Hurricanes Women suffer their second loss of this year's competition.
Chasing 152, the Hurricanes Women lost Lizelle Lee (0) on the very first ball. Marizanne Kapp picked up her second by cleaning up Danielle Wyatt-Hodge (1) in her next over. Nat Sciver-Brunt at three got a start and scored 27 before getting dismissed in the eighth over. In the next, Heather Graham holed out in the deep on one.
Nicola Carey scored a run-a-ball 18 before falling on the stroke of the drinks break as the Hurricanes Women were reduced to 53/5. Skipper Elyse Villani fought a lone battle for the Hurricanes but lacked support. It was too much to do in the end for the visitors. Villani scored 38 off 21 before getting knocked over by her opposite number in the 16th over.
The Stars Women were quick to wrap up the innings as they knocked over the Hurricanes Women on 114 in 16.2 overs to win the game by 37 runs. Sophie Day was the standout bowler for the hosts, finishing with figures of 4/17 from her 3.2 overs. Marizanne Kapp (2/29) and Annabel Sutherland (2/26) picked up two scalps each as they defended the total successfully.
Earlier, the Stars Women were asked to bat first and they lost Rhys McKenna (7) early in the innings. A 52-run stand between Meg Lanning (26) and Amy Jones (59) steadied the ship for the hosts but they lost their way in the second half. Lanning, skipper Annabel Sutherland (2) and Marizanne Kapp (2) fell in a quick succession.
Jones at the other end kept going strong and brought up a wonderful fifty. She received good support from Danielle Gibson as both took their side closer to the 150-run mark. Jones (59) and Gibson (39) departed at the back end of the innings as the Stars Women finished on 151/6. Nicola Carey (2/29) picked up two wickets for the Hurricanes Women. In reply, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and fell short by 37 runs.
W Day picks up her fourth of the match and puts an end to this contest. That's a wonderful grab from Prestwidge. Tossed up delivery on the stumps, Linsey steps out and lifts it straight back over the bowler's head. Prestwidge from long off runs hard to her left, keeps her eyes on the ball and dives to grab it with firm hands. Excellent effort and the Stars emerge victorious.
16.1 S Day to L Smith
1 Tossed up around off, Lauren steps out and slogs it along the ground to long on for a single.
