Player of the Match: Tadiwanashe Marumani
8:17 PM IST, 4:47 PM local time: Zimbabwe win by 5 wickets and take an unassailable 2-0 lead. Surely, the scars of not making it to the 2024 T20 World Cup are still fresh among the fans of the Chevrons. Hence, to them, this victory must feel good. Not only it has come 10 days before the commencement of the African Region Qualifiers, but also against a team that has impressed one and all in the last two editions of the marquee tournament.
What was even more heartening was the manner in which Zimbabwe won this match. For a long time, the opening partnership had been their Achilles' heel. However, today, it was indeed the openers who set it up for them.
Brian Bennett's blitzkrieg was authoritative — borderline disdainful even. And while he was making merry at one end, Marumani was smart enough to ride pillion. The southpaw came into his own post Bennett's dismissal and notched up an impressive half-century. They did stutter towards the middle, but then an effervescent cameo from Tony Munyonga and a cracking 13-ball-24 from Ryan Burl ensured that they crossed the finish line with 11 balls to spare.
For Namibia, JJ Smit returned the best figures of 2/38.
Earlier, the visitors had posted 169/6 riding on three very different innings. Malan Kruger's 44-ball-45 was sketchy at the start, but the right-hander somehow pulled through. Nicol Loftie-Eaton's 30-ball-47 was sprightly, while skipper Gerhard Erasmus scored a sparkling 25-ball-37.
For the hosts, Brad Evans and Richard Ngarava finished with two wickets apiece.
