8:20 PM IST, Local Time | Andhra Pradesh kick off their SMAT 2025/26 with a 29-run victory over Assam in a match dominated by the bowlers! Assam will be disappointed with the manner they went about this chase; they were bounced out of the contest!
Assam won the toss and elected to bowl first! Led by Mukhtar Hussain's 4/20, Assam restricted Andhra to a below-par score of 143/9 at the end of their 20 overs. Ricky Bhui's valiant knock of 46 runs was the only silver lining for Andhra in their batting innings.
Come the chase, it looked like Assam were in with a glorious chance to cause an upset. However, Stephen removed the keeper-batter Sumit in the very first over to give Andhra hope. Pradyun Saikia and Nihar Deka stabilised the innings with a 44-run partnership for the second wicket.
However, Satyanarayana Raju's introduction to the bowling attack flipped the script! He dismissed Nihar Dekha first for 10 runs, and followed it up with the huge wicket of Riyan Parag to put Assam in trouble. From then on, Andhra did not look back as a short-ball plan was hatched by the pacers, and Assam batters failed to counter it with any effectiveness.
Wickets at regular intervals meant that at one stage the boundary drought lasted for more than 50 balls. Pradyun Saikia was the lone warrior in the field for Assam, but his thought of a suicidal second run cost him big as he was sent back for 44 runs in the slog overs, and with him, Assam's hopes too went in flames.
