The Aces have not had enough time on the field this Super Smash with the weather hovering over their games. However, today when they got their opportunity, they showed sublime form. This will be a massive confidence boosting victory for the side. The action in this Kiwi carnival continues as we head to Wellington tomorrow for a game between the Wellington Firebirds and the Central Stags!
On this note, I, Manan Mehta would like to sign off on behalf of my colleagues Mohammad Anab and Ashok Dayma. See yaaa!!!
Max Chu (Otago Volts Captain):"Yeah absolutely. I thought Dale was fantastic. We always knew 200 was a good score and with wickets falling regularly it was never going to be easy to track those runs down.
I was inspired by Dale but it was a shame to see him on the other side. That is why I came out with such an attacking approach.
Yeah, you got to put these losses behind you and move on. The tournament comes thick and fast. Gotta be ready for every game and yeah that's about it. Need to brush this loss off quickly. I think Canterbury was 0 in 4 last season and they played the final so a lot of hope left out there."
Sean Solia (Auckland Aces Captain): "Started from the top. Then Bevon played well. Later, our bowlers also showed their potential and restricted them to a low score. Dale Phillips is our go-to man. Excellent performance by him. Spinners did well today but pacers also did their job. A couple of days off and we will just reflect on our performance and review our games."
Dale Phillips (POTM): "When you get off the mark with an inside edge, then it might be one of your days and it turned out for me. I tried to get off to a good start in powerplay and then launch it for the team in the end. It came off. I just asked Luke Watson to play freely on his debut. The work ethic of the boys has been good. What we have been doing off the field is coming on the field too. Nie to score a win against my previous team (Otago Volts). However, I still wish them luck and hope they do well in this tournament."
Player of the Match: Dale Phillips
8:08 AM IST and 3:38 PM Local Time: Auckland Aces win by 88 runs! This has been some solid drubbing from their side. They were superior in all departments from ball one and have hammered the Volts today.
The Volts put the Aces into bat first. Opener Dale Phillips was off to an absolute flyer. He smoked the ball around from ball one. His partner, Luke Watson on debut was struggling but Phillips made sure he made up for that. Watson got dismissed for an 18-ball 11.
Bevan Jacobs joined Phillips, and the pair continued the aggressive scoring. Phillips reached his 50 and eventually was dismissed for a career best 77 when the score was 105-2. Jacobs continued to press on the accelerator. He got company from the entire middle order for brief periods with everyone nailing a couple into the stands before getting dismissed in that very fashion.
Jacobs also got to 50 and made sure the Aces get to 200. It was not a very straightforward wicket out there and 200 seemed 15 above par at the halfway stage. The pick of the bowlers for the Volts was Ben Lockrose for his 3-42.
In the chase, the Volts started off on the wrong note losing two early wickets. They were reduced to 14-2 in 1.4 overs. However, Max Chu and Jack Boyle bounced back with a barrage of boundaries. They scored briskly and the Volts raced to 60 in 5 overs. That is when the Aces' spinners came into the action.
From 68/2 the Volts slipped to 86/5. This was courtesy of some fine bowling from Rohit Gulati and Siddhesh Dixit. The pair of Jack Boyle and Jake Gibson stitched a decent partnership before Harjot Johal nailed the match for the Aces. Johal was smoked for 16 in his powerplay over. However, he bounced back taking 4 wickets in 2 overs.
He reduced the Volts from 103/5 to 110/9. The Volts were bowled out for 112 eventually and handed a massive win to the Aces. The pick of the bowlers for the Aces were Harjot Johal (4-21) and Rohit Gulati (2-29).
