Nick Kelly (POTM & Wellington Firebirds Captain): "Yeah, very very pleased. It got tight than we would have liked but the bowlers were fantastic to close out the game.
The wicket of Brett I think. Snedden came in and picked his wicket. Made good use of the wind and it allowed us to get back.
I actually spoke with the coach yesterday. We haven't won a game since November 8th. Haven't told the boys. But it was good to get that monkey off the back there."
Player of the Match: Nick Kelly
12:18 PM IST, 7:48 PM Local Time: The match went down to the wire, but a brilliant bowling display from the Firebirds in the final two overs saw them win by 13 runs.
Earlier, after being invited to bat first, skipper Nick Kelly starred with a brilliant unbeaten 95 off 58 balls as Wellington Firebirds posted a formidable 194/3. After losing Tom Blundell early for one, Kelly and Tim Robinson steadied the innings with a fluent partnership, taking the score to 52/1 at the end of the powerplay. Robinson played a rapid knock, scoring 54 off 30 balls and bringing up his fifty in just 28 deliveries before falling in the 11th over, ending a 92-run stand. Kelly continued to anchor the innings, reaching his half-century in 36 balls and adding 46 runs with Muhammad Abbas, who made 13. Although the Brave bowlers kept things tight in the death overs, Kelly remained unbeaten, finding support from Jesse Tashkoff (23*) as the Firebirds closed on 194/3. Scott Kuggeleijn, Kristian Clarke and Brett Hampton picked up a wicket each for the Brave. Northern Brave put up a spirited fight in their chase of 195 but eventually fell short. They were rocked early as Katene Clarke departed off the very first ball, and despite Brett Hamptonās fluent 47 off 32, wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Robert OāDonnell (27) and Xavier Bell (26) tried to keep the chase on track through the middle overs, but disciplined bowling from the Firebirds ensured the asking rate kept creeping up, leaving the lower order with plenty to do in the final phase. Scott Kuggeleijn then produced a stunning counterattack, smashing 33 off just 17 balls to reignite Northern Braveās hopes and drag them back into the contest. His explosive cameo, which included three sixes, briefly swung the momentum, but unfortunately, he holed out in the final over of the match.
The Firebirds held their nerve in the closing stages to seal a 13-run victory. Yahya Zeb (3/29) was the standout with three crucial wickets. Logan van Beek (2/34) and Peter Younghusband (2/27) chipped in with a couple of wickets each, while Michael Snedden contributed a solitary wicket.
Fisher gets an edge on this one and that's the end of this contest. Brave fall short by 13 runs.
19.4 Y Zeb to M Fisher
W EDGED AND GONE! That's it! Yahya Zeb puts the final nail in the coffin, and Northern Brave are folded for 181 runs in 19.4 overs. Length delivery angling into the batter. Fisher clears his front leg and swings at it, but only to get a thick outside edge on it, and the keeper takes a sitter. Wellington Firebirds win by 13 runs and register their first points on the table.
