That marks the end of our coverage from the penultimate league game of WCL 2025 between Australia Champions and Pakistan Champions. Pakistan Champions have got a comprehensive victory and finishes the league game being at the helm of the points table.
For now, this is Saptak Sanyal signing off on behalf of my co-commentators Deepak Prakash and Akshay Bhide and the scorer/analyst of this game Zeeshan Naiyer. Don't go anywhere. Stay tuned to follow our live coverage of the final league fixture of WCL 2025 between India Champions and West Indies Champions.
Shoaib Malik (Pakistan Champions Captain):"Of course winning is something that brings a lot of smile on the faces. That's why I am smiling. Our cricketers are happy too. Taking this momentum and going to the knock out stage is a good thing for us as a team.
Saeed Ajmal is someone who is very jolly. Even if he is going for a run, he has a smile on his face. The way he bowled was like a young Saeed Ajmal was bowling. He took 6 wickets and this is what we expect from him.
Seamers set the tone for us. We had good spinners in Imad and Saeed. When you have quality spinners in the team, you expect them to deliver this performance."
Brett Lee (Australia Champions Captain): "Yeah, we were looking to put in our best performance, but, you know, that’s how things go in T20 cricket. The one thing I can say to the guys is — we’ve just got to try and put this behind us and go again on Thursday. No injuries, thank God. So hopefully, everyone will be fully fit for Thursday. But yeah, we need to reset mentally and focus again — come Thursday, we’ll look to take it to South Africa.
Oh look, you know, in the last two games, we probably haven’t fired — either with the bat or the ball — in conditions where we could’ve done better. But if you look at the couple of games before that, we were on fire. We pulled off a fantastic chase against India.
Chris (Lynn), in the first or second game, went out and smashed 80 off just 40 balls. So for me, we’re at that stage in the competition now where we’re doing okay. We’ve shown what we’re capable of — it’s just about finding that consistency."
Saeed Ajmal (Player of the Match):"I think I believed to coach and that helped me. He said me to come and play. Another thanks to the physio who made me ready to play the match.
I bowled two or three days in the nets and then picked up the injury. But it is always good to comeback and take the wickets."
Player of the Match: Saeed Ajmal
Time for the post-match presentation.
6:56 PM IST and 2:26 PM Local Time | Pakistan Champions have defeated the Australia Champions by 10 wickets in a completely one-sided affair. They have outplayed the Aussies in every facets of the game and are currently at the top most position of the points table.
Australia Champions came to bat first and lost their openers cheaply. Shaun Marsh and Chris Lynn got out cheaply but some good hits from Ben Dunk propelled them to 49 in the 6th over. That's when Saeed Ajmal started to operate and he ran a carnage with the ball. Firstly, he deceived Ben Dunk. Dunk tried to clear the long-off but found Fawad Alam there. Then in the next legal ball, he trapped Daniel Christian in front for a golden duck.
Later he got the better of the number 3 batter D'Arcy Short in the penultimate ball of the powerplay as Kamran Akmal stumped him. That final over of the powerplay decided the game. Pakistan Champions dominated right from there. Ajmal later dismissed Ben Cutting, Peter Siddle and Steve O'Keefe to finish with a handsome bowling figure of 6/16. Callum Ferguson and Nathan Coulter-Nile became the victims of Imad Wasim as the Aussies were bundled out for just 74.
Pakistan Champions came to chase the paltry target of 75 and started playing watchfully. Sohaib Maqsood and Sharjeel Khan played out Peter Siddle and Brett Lee in the first 3 overs but got a few boundaries. They targeted Nathan Coulter-Nile and took 18 from his 2 overs. Daniel Christian also went for some runs as he conceded 20 from the 2 overs he bowled.
John Hastings replaced Chris Lynn as an impact sub but made the impact of the worst stature. He struggled with his line and bowled five consecutive wides to start and got hit for a boundary in his second legal ball. He then bowled a no-ball but later he corrected himself to bowl some legal balls amidst the wides. When Sharjeel came to the strike, he operated from round the wicket and bowled three wides. Then he switched to over the wicket and again bowled two wides. 13 wide deliveries were bowled by him and he gave away 19 runs from the five legal balls he bowled. It was a horrible day for him to say the least.
Sharjeel Khan top scored with an unbeaten 32 off 23 balls hitting 5 fours and Sohaib Maqsood finished unbeaten with 28 off 26 balls with 4 boundaries.
