Donovan Ferreira (Player of the Match): "The runout was a good one for us. Got a little close there, more than we liked, but luckily we pulled it off. I am glad I could contribute with some runs.
Multiple roles is something we have been speaking about since game 1, and it looks like it will continue. Great to be contributing to 3 facets of the game.
This crowd has been really good over the last 3 years, and this year they have been topping themselves. It's great to play in front of them, and I hope I will continue to contribute in Joburg colours."
Player of the Match: Donovan Ferreira
Faf du Plessis (Joburg Super Kings Captain): "Well, as a neutral or as a fan I just want to say one thing, that's the kind of a match you want to see. All the ebbs and flows of the super over. A lot of different things happened in the game. There were times when the batters dominated, there were times when the bowlers looked unplayable. So, I think it had it all. It was a good cricket match.
Yeah, I thought looking at the wicket in the first innings that 205 was a little bit above par. But as you can see, there was heavy, heavy due which brings the finger spinners away from it. The pitch did skid a little bit more and then we also saw some quality batsmanship. Few brutal hits in the end which did put our players under pressure but we are happy to eventually get over the line.
(On that run out from Donovan Ferreira) Yeah, I remember a game long time ago when MS Dhoni was behind the stumps for India. I think it was against Bangladesh in a World Cup and I remember, the guy bowled a cut ball across him and that memory was in the back of my head. I just told Mulder to bowl it short across the batter and I was not banking at a run out. So, we are bowling for run outs now.
Look, I think Glees (Gleeson) tonight was just exceptional. When the batters put him under some pressure, he fought back brilliantly. That's the experience he brings into the table. With that wet ball, he bowled according to plan. Great to have him there. He bowled really well.
We are doing things slowly better. Tonight was nice to get a victory somehow and we will take that. It has been a good start to the tournament for us."
1:42 AM IST & 10:12 PM Local Time: Time for the post-match presentation ceremony..
Aiden Markram (Durban Super Giants Captain): "Mixed emotions to be honest. Great game of cricket once again. Very small margins at the end of the night and we will reflect on it to be a couple of percent better in our next game. That was one hell of a game to be part of.
Well, in the last 30 to 40 minutes has been a little bit over the show for me but when we settle down, we will reflect nicely as a group. I think we did many things good tonight which was great to see. The match went down to the wire and you can't pick such small things. Ultimately you will reflect back on the execution of plans and we will take it from there.
(On the umpiring decisions) Yeah, some of the decisions can be quite tricky I guess. Batters are moving all over the place especially with a really short boundary on one side. As players, you always look for consistency. So, we are not expecting them to be robots and get everything right but ultimately if it's comfortable for both the teams at the end of the night then we are happy with it.
(First Super Over in SA20 history) Yeah, it was the first ever Super Over in the competition. Cool crowd as well. Really cool atmosphere as well. I am sure this competition will live for a couple of more years. It's a blood entertaining game of cricket. As fans, you have got your money worth it."
1:28 AM IST, 9:58 PM Local Time | There could not have been a better game to kick off 2026! Joburg Super Kings win the first-ever super over in SA20 history to go top of the table on the first day of the new year! They defeated the Durban Super Giants in the super over after the match was tied in the 40 overs played before!
Durban Super Giants won the toss and elected to bowl first! However, Joburg Super Kings, on the back of an excellent opening partnership of 89 runs between Faf du Plessis (47) and Matthew de Villiers (38), Shubham Ranjane's brilliant and unbeaten 50 runs off 31 balls, and Donovan Ferreira's late innings cameo of 33 runs off 10 balls, were able to register a total of 205/4 at the end of their 20 overs!
Noor Ahmad was Durban's best bowler with 3/12 from 4 overs, and Simon Harmer's solitary wicket w454 the only positives from the first innings for Durban. Their pace trio of Bosch (0/56), Maphaka (0/50), and Wiese (0/53) failed on the day as each conceded more than 50 runs in the innings.
Come the chase, Joburg Super Kings started with spin at both ends and reaped rewards as Akeal Hosein picked up the wickets of Devon Conway (19) and Kane Williamson (22) to put pressure on DSG as Gleeson chipped in with the wicket of Buttler (15) to reduce the score to 61/3 after 7.4 overs.
Heinrich Klaasen, after a slow start, provided the much-needed impetus with 3 maximums before he fell to Ferreira for 29 runs. Post his wicket, it was the Markam and Jones show as the duo put together a quick partnership of 60 runs for the 5th wicket to bring Durban back into the game. Markam fell for 37 runs post the second timeout as he holed out in the deep off Gleeson's bowling.
There was a moment in the 18th over when Evan Jones was caught off Mulder's full toss, but a no-ball was called after the catch was taken. However, it did not matter much as the penultimate over brought Durban's worst nightmare to life as Evan Jones was run out due to a misunderstanding in the middle after having scored 43 runs off just 17 balls, and Gleeson followed it up by finding David Wiese's timber for 15 runs off 8 balls!
Durban needed 15 runs from the final over with Harmer and Bosch in the play, and the game produced one of the most dramatic overs as Durban scored 14 of those runs. Donovan Ferreira hit the bullseye with the gloves to cause a run out on the last ball, taking the game into the super over!
Richard Gleeson was Joburg's best bowler with 3/41 from 4 overs. Akeal Hosein chipped in with 2/31 and Donovan Ferreira picked up a solitary wicket to round up the bowling effort for Joburg!
In the super over, Durban batted first with Buttler and Jones as the opening pair, but they were met with a charged-up Richard Gleeson, who conceded only 5/1 to give Joburg a small target of 6 runs to win the contest!
For Joburg, it was a piece of cake as Rilee Rossouw hit 2 boundaries in the first 3 balls to seal the victory for Joburg Super Kings on their home ground! Both teams deserved to win the contest, but Joburg Super Kings edge their opponents out with the smallest of margins!
