Phew, what a couple of nights at the Gabba, with back-to-back thrillers in the BBL and both going the way of the home side. One was won by chasing and this one by defending, underlining how tight these contests have been. The Adelaide Strikers were found wanting for experience in their lower middle order and eventually choked in the run chase under pressure. Brisbane Heat pick up their second win of the tournament, while the Strikers are left nursing their second defeat.
For now, this is Pritam Dey signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Ajay Pal Singh who, along with scorer/analyst Ashok Dayma brought all the actions of this clash. Stay tuned for more cricketing action from around the world. BYE BYE👋
Xavier Bartlett (POTM & Brisbane Heat Captain): "Very tensed. Young captain, you know in those moment, had a lot of senior heads around me sort of calmed me down. I thought Tom Balkin on debut was unbelievable, he bowled the tough overs. To close out there, was outstanding.
Yeah, I thought you know just trying to get my overs out of the way and just back the boys and especially, in the end. Balkin bowled well with his pace, I think he is going to be a really good bowler for us going forward.
(On captaincy) No, it is amazing. I am enjoying it, hopefully I can continue to grow in the role. Yeah, just trying to take early wickets. They have a good batting order, early in roads is what we were after but still got the result in our way."

5:18 PM IST & 9:48 PM Local Time: What fascinating scenes we’ve witnessed at the Gabba. Yet another thriller unfolds at this iconic venue, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats till the very end. The 21-year-old debutant Tom Balkin delivers a magnificent final over, holding his nerve under immense pressure, picking up two crucial wickets and defending 10 runs. The Brisbane Heat hold on to win by 7 runs in a dramatic finish.
Earlier in the day, the Strikers won the bat flip and chose to field first. Brisbane Heat got off to a shaky start with the early loss of Jack Wildermuth in the second over of the innings. Luke Wood then made an impact in his second over, removing Colin Munro for a quick 14 off 9 balls to put the Heat under early pressure. Brisbane Heat struggled to build sustained momentum in their innings, as every time they looked set for a push, a wicket seemed to fall. That pattern defined their batting effort throughout the 20 overs.
Matt Renshaw played an important role in the middle, but his dismissal for 33 off 21 balls in the ninth over halted a promising phase. Max Bryant then stepped up with a superb knock down the order, top-scoring with a blistering 63 off 32 balls despite limited support from the other end. Handy cameos from Jimmy Peirson, who made 13 off 10 balls and Xavier Bartlett, who chipped in with 15 off 13, ensured the Heat posted a competitive 179/9 from their 20 overs. Two wickets apiece for Luke Wood (2/43), Hasan Ali (2/36) and Matthew Short (2/13).
In reply, the Strikers got off to a solid start with their openers laying a steady foundation. Matthew Short and Chris Lynn began watchfully before Short made good use of the field restrictions to keep the scoreboard ticking. By the end of the powerplay, the Strikers were well placed at 32/0. Lynn, however, struggled to find any real rhythm and was eventually dismissed for 22 off 24 balls, as Xavier Bartlett broke the 57-run opening stand to provide the breakthrough.
From a comfortable 57/0, the Strikers suddenly lost their way and slipped to 120/5, with the momentum swinging firmly in favour of the Heat. Jerrssis Wadia then walked in at number 7 and made an instant impact, smashing three towering sixes and a boundary off his first four deliveries during the power surge to almost turn the game on its head. With 36 runs needed off the final 30 balls and Shaheen Afridi ruled out of the remainder of the match due to injury, the pressure was immense on the Heat to hold their nerve and defend the total.
The match went right down to the wire as the Strikers continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, keeping the contest finely balanced till the end. With 10 runs required off the final over, debutant Tom Balkin showed remarkable composure under pressure. He executed his plans to perfection and defended the runs superbly, sealing a thrilling 7-run victory for his side. Skipper Xavier Bartlett (3/26) was the pick of the bowlers for the Heat.
W WICKET!!!! IN THE AIR & TAKEN!!! Balkin does it for the hosts. Loud cheers from a packed Gabba crowd!!! Back of a length on the leg stump. 129.9 kph. Nielsen goes for the pull but gets a top edge that goes high in the air to deep backward square leg, the ball is swirling in the air, fielder settles underneath that and takes a fine catch. A 7-run win for Heat at home.
Wayward from Balkin. It was a pace on delivery but down the leg side. 1 run deducted from the equation. 8 required off 2 balls. Balkin might go back to his slower delivery next ball.
