The New Zealand Women will look to extend their dominance and seal the series when they face the Zimbabwe Women in the second WODI in Dunedin on Sunday. After a commanding display in the opening game, the hosts enter the contest with momentum, while Zimbabwe will be eager to bounce back and keep the series alive.
New Zealand produced a clinical performance in the first match, with both bat and ball contributing to a comfortable victory. The experienced core of the side once again proved decisive. The Kiwis batted first and, for a change, lost skipper Amelia Kerr (15) early. However, Brooke Halliday had other plans as she scored a magnificent 157* off 118 balls. She stitched a 122-run partnership for the third wicket with Maddy Green (67). Then an unbeaten 151-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Isabella Gaze (59*).
In the end, the White Ferns posted a giant total of 354/3. It was the third-highest total ever for NZ in WODIs. Also, Halliday's knock of 157* was the third-highest individual score recorded by a Kiwi batter in WODIs.
In reply, Zimbabwe Women could manage only 174/10 in 47.3 overs. Expect opener Kelis Ndhlovu, no batter scored a half-century. In the end, Zimbabwe lost by 180 runs, which was their biggest-ever defeat by runs in WODI cricket. Skipper Kerr recorded her second-best career bowling figures with 4/35. Meanwhile, Jess Kerr took three scalps. For Zimbabwe, the first ODI highlighted areas that need improvement.
Captain Nomvelo Sibanda hopes her side can put up a stronger batting display, particularly from experienced players such as Modester Mupachikwa and Beloved Biza. Building partnerships and negotiating New Zealand’s varied bowling attack will be key if they are to challenge the hosts. Zimbabwe’s bowlers, including Christabel Chatonzwa and Precious Marange, showed glimpses of promise in the opening encounter but struggled to contain the flow of runs. A more disciplined effort with the ball will be crucial if they are to level the series.
While New Zealand will start as clear favourites given their depth and experience, Zimbabwe will view the second ODI as an opportunity to showcase resilience and growth on the international stage.
