Milestone
That's it from our coverage of the first one-day international between New Zealand and England from the Bay Oval. A good fresh start for the Kiwis to the home series but disappointment for both sides as Joe Root and Kane Williamson fail to score big. Ninaad Dixit here signing off on behalf of my co-commentator AkshayaKrishna Polya, scorer Paras Yadav and statistician Aman. Stay tuned for more action from around the world.
Mitchell Santner (New Zealand Captain): "It was tough work in the end. The way we started off, wickets in the powerplay are always a good start.

Matt Henry and Zak Foulkes were outstanding swinging the ball. Obviously long spells. We knew wickets were massive even when they are 4 down. They had Jos Buttler and Jamie batting at 7-8 so we knew that we had to take wickets. Dismissing Brookie a little bit earlier would have been nice but he was outstanding today.

[on the chase] There was still a little bit in the wicket. We lost a couple of wickets more than we would have liked in the chase. The intent was great. One big partnership killed us. It was nice that Bracewell and Daryl's partnership there was and it was massive for us."
Harry Brook (POTM and England Captain): "It wasn't an easy surface to start with. A lot was happening in the middle when I walked out. I felt like I was in good touch. I tried to counter-punch. Thankfully, it came off today. I've done it a few times; to be honest, it's either a do-or-die moment, and thankfully, I've been on the right side of that a few times and managed to get us to a decent score to try and defend.

Can't really tell which shot I liked among those 11 sixes. Probably, the first one!

220 was defendable on this wicket in the end. We started well with the ball, with Carse and Wood bowling well. We didn't get enough wickets in the middle overs as they built partnerships.

To get 3-4 wickets in the powerplay was an awesome start for us. We need to find ways to get wickets through the middle stage. We knew it was going to seam around a little bit. Most of our wickets came off by hitting the stumps. They always kept the stumps in play.

Could we have gone a little bit harder with the bat to put them under more pressure? Maybe yes! That's something we can learn from this game and take forward. You have to get the bowlers off their lines and lengths. They were brilliant with the ball. We needed to do something to get their bowlers under pressure, whether that's going aerial or using your feet down the pitch. We talk a lot about trying to put them under pressure, and in these conditions, it is very important."

12:59 PM IST, 8:29 PM Local Time: New Zealand go 1-0 up in the 3-match ODI series with an exciting 4-wicket victory over England at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. New Zealand won the toss and sent England in restricting them to 223 before special knocks from Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell took them home.

Matt Henry provided a perfect start to the series cleaning up Jamie Smith first ball with England soon brought down to 56/6. Skipper Harry Brook displayed his class with 135 in 101 balls, his highest ODI score and helped England to a fighting 223.

Zak Foulkes (4/41) registered his best List A figures, Jacob Duffy (3/55) and Henry (2/53) were in the wickets as well with skipper Mitchell Santner claiming 1/22 removing the danger man Brook. Jamie Overton hit an important 46 in 54 balls as well.

The Kiwi response wasn't as good as they would want with Will Young (5), Kane Williamson (0), Rachin Ravindra (17) and Tom Latham (24) returning to the hut inside 12 overs. Bracewell batting at number 6 was dropped early for 2 by Joe Root and then punished the English bowlers with a match changing knock.

The left hander scored 51 in as many balls hitting 6 boundaries and added 92 runs for the 5th wicket with Mitchell. Santner played a cameo of 27 in 25 balls smashing Adil Rashid for 2 sixes in the 35th over before holing out in the deep trying to go for the third.

Nathan Smith batted without any pressure and struck an early boundary as well with Mitchell finishing the game off with a six and a four in Rashid's penultimate over which was the 37th over of the match. The Kiwi allrounder didn't bowl a single over but finished the job with the bat scoring an unbeaten 78 off 91 deliveries with 7 fours and 2 sixes.

Brydon Carse (3/45) was excellent with the ball but didn't find much support from the other end as the rest of the bowlers proved expensive. Jamie Overton (0/30) and Sam Curran (0/24) were slightly economic but couldn't provide the breakthroughs when needed by the side.

STAY TUNED AS WE RETURN WITH THE POST MATCH PRESENTATION.
