New Zealand have plenty to ponder after a dismal show in the series opener against South Africa in Bay Oval as the action shifts to Seddon Park in Hamilton. The second T20I will be played on Tuesday (March 17).
The hosts were blown away on a bowling-friendly surface as the Proteas hit their lengths consistently and bundled the Blackcaps out for 91 in 14.3 overs.
Not only do New Zealand have to recover from that hammering, but they must also deal with a few injury concerns as they look to bounce back in the series.
Bevon Jacobs twisted his left knee in the closing stages of the first T20I and had to walk off the field. He has since been replaced in the squad by Katene Clarke, who has joined as cover.
Meanwhile, Lockie Ferguson is back in the squad for the second game, but Ish Sodhi has been ruled out of the remainder of the series with a broken thumb. No replacement will be named for Sodhi.
Despite a clinical performance from the visitors, they too have a few injury concerns heading into this game. Jordan Hermann, one of the four debutants for the Proteas at the Bay Oval, injured his right leg in the outfield during the 12th over and had to be taken off the field.
He was slated to open the batting, but a hamstring strain ruled him out of making his maiden appearance with the bat for the Proteas. While there has been no official update on his availability, the short turnaround and travel between venues could make it difficult for him to feature in the playing XI for the visitors.
In the last game, New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat. The top order was blown away by Gerald Coetzee and Ottneil Baartman as the hosts lost five wickets inside the powerplay.
Jimmy Neesham top-scored with 26. Bevon Jacobs (10), Mitchell Santner (15) and Cole McConchie (15) were the only other batters to reach double figures as the Blackcaps were bundled out for 91.
Nqobani Mokoena was the pick of the bowlers with figures of three for 26. Coetzee, Baartman and Keshav Maharaj picked up two wickets each.
In reply, Tony de Zorzi fell cheaply in the second over of the chase. However, his opening partner Connor Esterhuizen looked calm and composed at the crease. He remained unbeaten on 45 off 48 balls and steered the Proteas home. Jason Smith scored 10, while Dian Forrester remained not out on 16 off 25 on a difficult batting surface.
For New Zealand, Kyle Jamieson, Zak Foulkes and Santner picked up one wicket each. Santner was particularly impressive, conceding just eight runs in his full quota of four overs. However, it was not enough to stop the Proteas from going 1-0 up in the series.
