New Zealand
and South Africa hoped to write their own destiny and come into this series as reigning T20 World Champions, but the big game nemesis got the better of them. The Black Caps decimated the Proteas in the semi-final at Eden Gardens just over a week ago, before bowing to the co-hosts India in a one-sided final in Ahmedabad last Sunday.

Both teams will now engage in a five-match T20I series, starting on Sunday (March 15) at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. Both sides have given rest to most of the mainstream players, with a couple of big franchise leagues coming up later in the month.

Even a 5-0 win for South Africa over the Kiwis in this series won't be enough to overcome the trauma that was caused by Finn Allen and Tim Seifert in Kolkata, and the reverse won't erase the memories of the title defeat to the Men in Blue at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

For starters, Mitchell Santner, whose captaincy was under a bit of scrutiny in the T20 WC final, will lead New Zealand in the first three games. Tom Latham will make a T20I comeback to lead the hosts in the last two matches.

Michael Bracewell (calf), Adam Milne (ankle), Will O'Rourke (back) and Blair Tickner (ankle) were not considered for the series due to their respective injuries.

Regulars Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra and Tim Seifert have been rested alongside Matt Henry, who has also taken some time to spend with his new baby.

Devon Conway, Jimmy Neesham, Ish Sodhi and Kyle Jamieson are the senior pros in the team. At the same time, Lockie Ferguson has been rested for the first T20I before the speedster becomes available for the 2nd and 3rd matches. Neesham, Sodhi and Jamieson are available for the entire series, while Conway will take the gloves in the first 3 T20Is only.

Nathan Smith and Ben Sears come back into the NZ set-up after having some injury concerns earlier in the summer. Cole McConchie has retained his place in the T20I side after performing well in his limited opportunities in the WC, while being a replacement player for the injured Bracewell.

Opener Tim Robinson, seamer Zak Foulkes, and the middle-order batter Bevon-John Jacobs, who has been in tremendous form in recent times, are back in the squad after failing to make the cut for the marquee event.

Central Stags' all-rounder Josh Clarkson is also back in the squad, with Wellington Firebirds' top-order batter Nick Kelly getting a chance in the shortest format. Along with Smith, Kelly hasn't played a T20I so far. There are a couple of other fresh faces who will join for the latter stages of the series.

On the other hand, South Africa are going with a depleted squad, with plenty of newbies in the set-up that is led by the left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj. He is set to play in his 50th T20I and is two short of 50 scalps in this format for the visitors.

The Proteas had a perfect record in the T20 WC 2026 until the fearless Kiwi outfit halted their juggernaut in the semis. SA have rested 12 of their players who featured in the recently concluded T20 WC in India and Sri Lanka. Apart from Maharaj, George Linde and Jason Smith are the other two players who have been retained from the T20 WC squad.

Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton, Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje and Kwena Maphaka are the ones who are not travelling to New Zealand.

All-rounder Wiaan Mulder has replaced Eathan Bosch, who has been ruled out of the tour due to a hamstring injury.

Pacers Gerald Coetzee, Ottneil Baartman, Lutho Sipamla, left-handed batters Tony de Zorzi and Rubin Hermann make a return to the T20I set-up along with all-rounder Andile Simelane. De Zorzi missed the WC spot due to a hamstring injury, and now, he has fully recovered. Off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been rewarded for his quality performances in the SA20.

There are four uncapped players - Connor Esterhuizen, Dian Forrester, Jordan Hermann, and Nqobani Mokoena - who will aim to get a taste of the big stage after dominating the domestic circuit back home. Esterhuizen is expected to don the gloves, while the Hermann brothers are expected to run the show with their class after scoring runs consistently in various forms of domestic cricket. The 19-year-old fast-bowler Mokoena was in fine touch in the recently concluded SA20 and could be in line to make his debut.

Interestingly, all five matches are part of the special doubleheaders with the White Ferns taking on South Africa Women in as many T20Is at the same venues a few hours before the men's contest.
