Pitch Report (Alan Wilkins & Aaron Finch):
Wilkins: "Thereās a change in the weather today here in Colombo. Itās more humid, the skies are grey, and weāve had some drizzle already. You might notice a few umbrellas around the ground. The forecast suggests slightly lower temperatures, but there could be the odd shower later in the day. What have we got here, Finchy?"
Finch: "This looks like an absolute beauty of a batting wicket, Wilko. The first thing I noticed is the straw-colored grass. There isnāt much live grass on the surface, just enough to provide a bit of pace. To me, that suggests itās going to be a very good pitch for batting. So what does that mean when youāve got the ball in hand? Well, as weāve seen throughout this tournament, you have to be willing to pitch it up a little fuller. You want to challenge the stumps, target the top of off, and really test the batter around the knee roll."
Wilkins: "Yes, just to reaffirm what Aaron Finch mentioned, length will be absolutely critical for the bowlers on this pitch today."
Vishmi Gunaratne (Sri Lanka Women): "Yeah, we had a great fight out there. We made a couple of mistakes, and the match slipped away, but weāre confident we can do a lot better today. This is my first time facing Australia in an ODI, and with such a huge crowd here in Sri Lanka, itās going to be a great contest.
Obviously, theyāre the best team in the world, and Iām really excited to face them. But one loss doesnāt mean weāre down in this tournamentāwe still have six more matches to go. Today weāre up against the strongest side, Australia, and weāre ready to give them a good fight as well."
Annabel Sutherland (Australia Women): "Yeah, weāve had a few days in between games, but weāre excited to be here and ready for today. We feel like weāve had a really good lead-in, especially coming off a pretty challenging series against India, which weāve learned a lot from. Weāre really looking forward to whatās ahead.
I think having a big partnership through the middle overs in fifty-over cricket is really important, and thatās something weāll be aiming to do today. The top order is also pretty hungry for runs, so hopefully we can set things up nicely.
Yeah, exactly. We bat really deep, and that certainly frees up the top order, which we know is one of our strengths. Itās great to be able to utilize that depth, but at the same time, it would be nice to see the top order do the majority of the work throughout the innings.
Obviously, Athapaththu is a key player for them at the top. But they also have some quality spin options, so weāre expecting to face quite a bit of spin through the middle overs."
2:33 PM IST, Local Time: The rain has eased off, and the groundsmen are out to the middle to start their work.
