Kent have done all they could tonight—now, all eyes turn to Hove. Their fate hangs in the balance as their quarter-final hopes depend on the outcome of the Sussex-Surrey clash.
Essex got off to a blazing start thanks to Paul Walter and Michael Pepper, who took full advantage of the fielding restrictions and powered their side to 65/0 at the end of the Powerplay. A big total looked on the cards, but Kent clawed their way back with tight spells from Matthew Parkinson and Joey Evison—both returning identical figures of 1/22.
Paul Walter notched up a fine fifty but fell for 52 in the 15th over, just when Essex were eyeing a late surge. Charlie Allison played a vital hand in the middle with a composed 48 off 33, while Critchley and Harmer chipped in with useful cameos to take Essex to a competitive 172/6. Nathan Gilchrist impressed for Kent, picking up 2/35 in his four overs.
In reply, Kent got off to a steady start with openers Daniel Bell-Drummond and Tawanda Muyeye setting the tone early, adding 46 for the first wicket. Bell-Drummond fell for 13 in the final over of the Powerplay, but the platform was laid.
Harry Finch then joined Muyeye, and the pair took complete control of the chase. Together, they stitched a massive 114-run stand for the second wicket, dominating the Essex bowlers with a flurry of boundaries. Both looked eager to wrap up the game quickly but fell in quick succession towards the end—Muyeye for a brilliant 80, and Finch for a well-made 64. Skipper Sam Billings then finished things off in style, remaining unbeaten on 11 as Kent romped home by 7 wickets with 16 balls to spare.
