2 AM IST & 9:30 PM Local Time: That’s the end of a cracking contest in Leeds! All 20 wickets fell in this rivalry clash, but it’s the visitors, Lancashire, who held their nerve to clinch a 21-run victory. With this win, they not only book their spot in the quarter-finals but also secure a home quarter-final.
Earlier, Keaton Jennings opted to bat first, and Phil Salt came out blazing. Despite losing the skipper early, Salt and Buttler made the most of the Powerplay. But post that, it was Yorkshire’s show. Jafer Chohan struck twice in one over, dismissing Salt and Turner to spark a collapse.
Jos Buttler stood tall amid the chaos, scoring a valiant 77 off 46 and crossing 13,000 T20 runs, becoming only the 7th batter to do so. However, Yorkshire’s death bowling was top notch — Milnes (2/27), Thompson (2/30), and Chohan (2/33) all chipping in with two wickets each as Lancashire were bundled out for 174.
In reply, Yorkshire had a stuttering start to their chase, losing three crucial wickets within the Powerplay. Luke Wood set the tone early by cleaning up Jonny Bairstow for just 5. The ever-reliable James Anderson then made his presence felt, dismissing William Luxton for 9 and sending back Dawid Malan for 19 soon after.
Yorkshire were in desperate need of a partnership, and it was Pakistan international Abdullah Shafique who stood tall with a composed innings in the middle. He, along with Will Sutherland, stitched together a vital 35-run stand for the sixth wicket, and at that point, the chase looked to be under control for the hosts. But skipper Keaton Jennings brought back the experienced James Anderson, and the veteran delivered once again—removing Shafique for a well-made 54.
That wicket triggered a collapse. From 132/5, Yorkshire lost wickets in clusters and were eventually bowled out for 153. Despite a valiant effort from Sutherland lower down the order, it wasn’t enough, as Lancashire got their revenge for the first-leg defeat last week and sealed a crucial win.
W GONEEEE!! That wraps up the game here in Leeds! Over the wicket. Length ball outside leg, following Chohan who backs away for room. He looks to flick it away on the onside. Gets a top edge which goes straight up in the air. Hurst at deep backward square leg, settles underneath it and takes a comfortable catch. Lancashire win by 21 runs.
