So that marks the end of our coverage from the 8th match of GSL 2025. Rangpur Riders have won three consecutive games and have booked a spot in the summit clash scheduled on Friday night. Dubai Capital started their season with a victory but then lost three games to finish on a low.
For now, this is Saptak Sanyal signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Hiren Kumar and our scorers/analysts Paras Yadav and Sachin Yadav. Good night.
Nurul Hasan (Rangpur Riders Captain):"Thanks to the almighty. I think it is a very good tournament. We played good cricket and it feels good to qualify again.
I think the final two overs with the bat was important for us. The guys have done well with the ball. It is a result of a team effort. Yes we had a chance when it was 9 off 6 in the final overs. But we kept the belief.
Yes, Amazon Warriors and Hurricanes are tough teams. Playing under the lights in the final won't be an easy task."
Gulbadin Naib (Dubai Capitals Captain):"It's a great game to watch. A tough tournament for us. A very balanced side was there for all the teams. It is not the ideal finish for us.
If you see the talented guys like Sediqullah and Kaleem Sana, they are good. More hardwork will lead them to be great professional cricketers. GSL has been a wonderful tournament. We spent a good times here. Condition for the game was perfect."
Iftikhar Ahmed (Player of the Match):"It feels good to win against a good team. This victory definitely boosts your morale. We have got a good squad and it gives you an extra motivation when you win.
The way Nurul Hasan has played and our partnership went, it was good. It becomes good as a professional when you get such support from the other end. We got the total we wanted to achieve and thanks to the almighty that we won."
Player of the Match: Iftikhar Ahmed
11:00 PM IST and 1:30 PM Local Time | Rangpur Riders have come out victorious in their third match and have made it to another final. They will now defend their title on Friday. They have kept their nerves till the end and are the deserving winners.
Earlier Rangpur Riders won the toss and elected to bat first. They lost their opener Ibrahim Zadran cheaply in the start but Kyle Mayers and Soumya Sarkar hit a few boundaries to keep the scoreboard moving in the powerplay. Mayers got out for 19 and after Mahidul Islam got out cheaply.
Soumya hit Shakib for a maximum but fell just two balls later to him. His 36-run innings was extremely valuable for the Riders. However, the momentum was actually generated by Iftikhar Ahmed and Nurul Hasan. They added 54 runs for the 6th wicket and remained unbeaten. Nurul Hasan was the aggressor in the final couple of overs. He hit two maximums to finish the innings by remaining unbeaten on 34 off 18 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes. Iftikhar scored 41 off 32 balls with exactly 3 fours and 2 sixes too.
Dominic Drakes, Gulbadin Naib, Rohan Mustafa, Qais Ahmad and Shakib Al Hasan took a wicket each.
Coming to chase the 159-run target, Dubai Capitals faced a couple of early jolts as their experiment of sending Kadeem Alleyne failed and in the very first ball of his innings, Gulbadin Naib got out. Niroshan Dickwella swung his bat wildly, got life a couple of times but scored only 9.
Sanjay Krishnamurthi and the other opener Sediqullah Atal then changed their approach and rotated the strike. They got a few sporadic boundaries and took their team towards the target. But in the space of just two overs, Capitals lost Krishnamurthi (27), Shakib Al Hasan (3) and Sediqullah Atal (38). They were down to 85/6 and Capitals' defeat seemed to be a certainty.
Jesse Bootan and Dominic Drakes added 30 runs for the 7th wicket. Bootan added 15 to his name before departing and Drakes pulled the equation down to 28 off the final two overs. Qais Ahmad then took on his fellow countryman Azmatullah Omarzai in the 19th over. He hit two maximums and a misfield allowed him a boundary but he found Ibrahim Zadran in the deep. The equation was 9 off 7 then. Kaleem Sana fended the final ball of the penultimate over to bring Drakes back on strike with 9 required off the final over.
Khaled bowled the final over and he bowled the first ball a dot and Drakes pulled him in the second ball but only to find Ibrahim Zadran at deep midwicket. Dubai Capitals lost the match there by 8 runs as that was their final wicket to fall.
Saif Hassan was the star of the show picking up 3 wickets for 20 runs. Khaled Ahmed celebrated two wickets. Iftikhar Ahmed took a wicket for 23 runs off his 4 overs and for his incredible all-round performance, he bagged the player of the match award.
