Sri Lanka start the 3-match ODI series with a bang!
Opting to bat first, the Lankans were off to a horrible start, losing three wickets for just 29 runs. Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka steadied the ship with a crucial partnership, with Asalanka going on to score his 5th international century, a composed 106 off 123 balls.
Janith Liyanage and Wanindu Hasaranga chipped in with handy 29 and 22 respectively, but Sri Lanka couldn’t finish strong and were bowled out for just 244. Bangladesh would have been pleased with their bowling effort, outstanding with the new ball and brilliant at the death. Taskin Ahmed starred with 4/47 in his 10 overs, while Tanzim Hasan Shakib was excellent with 3 wickets.
In the chase, Bangladesh were off to a blazing start, reaching the 100-run mark in no time despite an early wicket. Tanzid Hasan was solid at the top, scoring 62 off 61 balls, but what followed was a complete collapse. The spin duo of Wanindu Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis ran through the middle order as Bangladesh lost wickets in clusters, going from 100/2 to 105/8 in no time. Their struggle against spin summed up the collapse, and despite the promising start, they fell apart under pressure.
A dominant bowling display from Sri Lanka, with spinners leading the charge, sealed the game comfortably for the hosts. Wanindu Hasaranga was the pick of the bowlers and ended with figures of 4/10 in his 7.5 overs. Kamindu Mendis was also brilliant and picked up 3 to his name. In the end, Jaker Ali did take the game deep and scored a fine fifty but had no support from the other end.
A clinical performance from Sri Lanka to kick off the series, while Bangladesh will need to regroup quickly ahead of the second ODI.
