The much-anticipated ODI leg of India Women’s tour of Australia gets underway on Tuesday at Allan Border Field in Brisbane, with the first of three ODIs promising a high-quality contest between two of the world’s premier sides. Fresh from recent white-ball engagements and with both teams in transition in certain areas, the series opener carries significant weight.
For India, it marks an opportunity to build momentum in overseas conditions. For Australia, it is a chance to reassert their dominance at home and set the tone for the series.
Australia will look to give a nice send-off to their skipper Alyssa Healy, who takes over the charge from the WT20I skipper Sophie Molineux, in her career's final WODI series but their opponent is none other but winners of last year's World Cup, India.
Both sides recently played a three-match T20I series in which India defeated the hosts 2-1. Smriti Mandhana was the highest run-scorer of the series with 129 runs from three innings while Arundhati Reddy was the leading wicket-taker with eight wickets. However, Reddy is not part of the ODI squad. Australia's highest run scorer was Georgia Voll with 116 runs while their leading wicket-taker was seamer Annabel Sutherland.
Australia have never been defeated by India in a WODI bilateral series. However, this Indian team has recently won the World Cup and defeated the Aussies in the nail-biting semi-final game of the multi-nation tournament. In that match, Jemimah Rodrigues played the knock of her life and pulled off a miraculous chase.
Australia have made two changes from their recent T20I squad. Apart from skipper Alyssa Healy, leggie Alana King also comes in the squad. Meanwhile, Megan Schutt and Grace Harris have been dropped. The Indian team has made four changes from their T20I squad. Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Kashvee Gautam and Uma Chetry have been added, while Shreyanka Patil, Bharti Fulmali, Gunalan Kamalini and Arundhati Reddy have been dropped.
Rawal is coming off an ankle injury, which she suffered during last year's WC. The top-order batter has now been cleared and will most likely play in her first international game after a gap of around five months. It will be interesting to see at which position she will bat because, since Shafali Verma's return to the side and heroics in the WC final against the Proteas, the star batter is the number one choice for the opening spot, along with Smriti Mandhana.
Also, keeper-batter Gunalan Kamalini is injured and has been replaced by Assam's Uma Chetry.
The first hour with the new ball could define the match. The surface at the Allan Border Field traditionally offers early movement for seamers, and both teams possess quality pace options capable of exploiting any assistance on offer. It is worth mentioning that Australia have a perfect record at this venue. The side has won all 20 completed WODI games at this ground.
Notably, India are currently leading in this multi-format series by 4-2. A win in the first WODI will widen their lead to 6-2. A loss will help the Southern Stars equalise it 2-2.
