The games are coming thick and fast in the Caribbean Premier League 2025. With the race to the playoffs heating up, we move on to Guyana for the final leg of the CPL.Guyana Amazon Warriors begin their home leg with a high-octane clash against Trinbago Knight Riders at Providence Stadium in the 23rd match of the season on Sunday (September 7).
TKR have already qualified for the playoffs, courtesy of their dominating home led where they managed to win four of their five matches. They currently sit in second place on the points table, with 12 points from 8 matches, having won six and lost two.
The Nicholas Pooran-led side was going berserk in Tarouba, and it needed something special from any opposition to stop the Knight Riders' winning run. Defending champions, Saint Lucia Kings, came up with a marvellous effort in the fifth and final home game of the four-time champions to hand TKR a seven-wicket hammering.
TKR's batting line-up, which has the likes of Colin Munro, Alex Hales, Pooran, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell and Akeal Hosein, failed to turn up against the Kings as the Pooran-led side was blown away for just 109 in 18.1 overs. Nicky P's 27-ball 30 was the top contribution with the bat.
Spinners - Sunil Narine and Usman Tariq - tried to salvage something out of it as they troubled the David Wiese-led side a bit, but there weren't enough runs on the board to make it five wins in a row at home as TKR surrendered in the 12th over.
Mohammad Amir missed TKR's previous game due to a groin injury. In case the Pakistani seamer recovers in time, he will be straight back in the playing XI.
On the other hand, the Imran Tahir-led side is fourth on the points table at the moment, with 6 points from 5 games, having won three and lost two. With its next five matches are at home, the 2023 champions have a solid chance of finishing in the top two. Having said that, if the home leg goes horribly wrong for the Amazon Warriors, they might well bow out of the tournament.
Trinbago Knight Riders had the last laugh over Guyana in the earlier meet-up this season as they won the contest by six wickets at Brian Lara Cricket Academy. There were plenty of batters getting the starts and failing to convert them into a big score as the Amazon Warriors were restricted to 163/9 in 20 overs. The highlight of the innings was skipper Tahir coming out to bat and blasting a big hit on the final ball of the innings. Akeal Hosein was the start of the TKR bowling line-up, scalping three wickets.
Amir, Narine, Russell and Terrance Hinds chipped in with decent spells before TKR's openers made a mockery of the run chase. Hales and Munro slammed fifties, adding 116 runs for the first wicket, before Tahir led an imperious fightback with a four-wicket spell in the blink of an eye. Pollard and Russell kept their nerves as they brought their experience into play and didn't allow the Amazon Warriors to celebrate further.
Guyana have bounced back nicely to hand Barbados Royals yet another heartbreak in a thriller. Bowling first, the Tahir-led side restricted the Royals to 165/6 in 20 overs. Despite young Jediah Blades going for runs, the likes of Dwaine Pretorius, Romario Shepherd, Tahir and Gudakesh Motie bowled with discipline and kept a check on the Royals' scoring.
The Amazon Warriors were in deep trouble at 30/4 at one stage. Shai Hope and Pretorius resurrected the sinking ship with respective half-centuries. The latter failed to stay till the end, but Hope anchored the run chase along with Quentin Sampson as the Guyana-based franchise reached home with 4 wickets and 2 balls remaining.
This is the first of the matches that would follow the Women's CPL game at Providence Stadium.
