Time for us to conclude our coverage from the 2nd ODI of the 3-match ODI series. The rain curtailed game swung like a pendulum but Roston Chase and Justin Greaves kept their nerves and took their team home. West Indies have levelled the series by 1-1 margin with the decider to follow on Tuesday.
For now, this is Saptak Sanyal signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Ajay Pal Singh and the scorers/analysts of this game Vishnu Verma, Ashok Dayma and Chandan Kumar Singh. Good night.
Shai Hope (West Indies Captain):"We did nicely there. Something we talk a lot about coming back and we are happy with the win today. The purpose is to get better with every single game.
Seales is a class act. He is a quality bowler and I am happy to see him going strength to strength. It is a great thing for us that he carried his red ball form to ODI cricket. It was a tough surface to bat on. Turn was a bit higher comparative to the last game and the ball was coming slow. Glad to see the batters take us over the line.
You must give them (Roston Chase and Justin Greaves) credit. You should not forget the innings Rutherford played. He gave us the necessary impetus. A good batting display from the guys and a lot of positives for us."
Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan Captain): "We put in a good effort. It was difficult to bat, it was spinning and seaming. Rutherford's attacking game took the momentum away from us. Roston Chase then finished the game well.
Yes, you can say that. Your fifth bowler leaked a lot of runs. But in the last few years, Salman Agha and Saim Ayub have bowled a lot and bowled well for us. Saim didn't bowl well today but he did well in the T20Is. If he had picked up wickets, things would have been different. It is just part of the game.
Honestly, the forecast is totally different. We are unable to understand it. We are going in with options. We will see how the conditions are and will make a call on the XI after that."
Roston Chase (Player of the Match):"Obviously I am happy with the win. We had to level the series. It was a difficult to start against the spinners. Nawaz is turning it. I knew when the pace will come, it will be easy to hit. I am an off side player so I hit mostly through that.
I told Greaves that you have time, a lot of time in fact. Even if you play the dot balls, do not throw away the wicket because the scoring will be easier later. I have been bowling well and captain backs me a lot."
Player of the Match: Roston Chase
Time for the post-match presentations.
3:41 AM IST & 6:11 PM Local Time: West Indies level the series with a five-wicket win in this rain-affected second ODI. Roston Chase guided them home with a composed, unbeaten 49. This marks West Indies' first ODI win against Pakistan since their clash in the 2019 World Cup. The two sides had met four times in ODIs since then, with the Windies on the losing end each time — until now. They finally have a victory on the board against the Men in Green.
Earlier in the game, West Indies won the toss and opted to bowl first. Shai Hope wanted his bowlers to use the moisture in the surface.
Pakistan started well but a double-wicket maiden over by Jayden Seales pushed the visitors on the back foot. He removed Saim Ayub and Babar Azam, who got out for a duck.
Jediah Blades then accounted for Abdullah Shafique. The left-arm spin of Gudakesh Motie was too much to handle for Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan as he missed a straight ball and was adjudged LBW.
There were three rain breaks in total during Pakistan’s innings. After the second rain break, the match was reduced to 40 overs per side.
After 37 overs, rain arrived again and Pakistan's innings ended at 171/7. The revised target for the West Indies was 181 in 35 overs.
The hosts started poorly as they lost both their openers inside the first four overs. Hasan Ali took both the wickets. A 36-run stand between Keacy Carty and Shai Hope steadied the ship for the Windies.
Carty struggled to tackle the spin and was castled by Abrar Ahmed. Sherfane Rutherford then joined hands with his skipper and played a blinder of a knock. He took the spinners on and made 45 off 33.
Hope was solid and he made 32 off 35. Roston Chase remained unbeaten on 49 off 47. Justin Greaves gave him good company as he scored 26* off 31. The West Indies got over the line with 10 balls to spare.
Hasan Ali and Mohammad Nawaz both picked up two wickets each and Abrar Ahmed chipped in with one but it wasn't enough to stop the West Indies from chasing down the total.
