07:51 AM IST, 10:21 PM Local Time: HASAN NAWAZ FINISHES IT OFF IN STYLE! A superb chase from Pakistan as they take a 1-0 lead against the West Indies with this five-wicket victory. The visitors got several useful contributions, but it was the unbeaten 104-run partnership between Hasan Nawaz and Hussain Talat that sealed the deal.
Chasing 281 for victory, Pakistan lost an early wicket in the form of Saim Ayub as Jayden Seales had him caught behind at the end of the third over. From there on, the duo of Abdullah Shafique and Babar Azam built a fine partnership. However, the West Indies reviewed a turned down LBW appeal to remove Shafique in the 12th over off Shamar Josephâs bowling. The experienced pairing of Babar and Mohammad Rizwan stitched a 55-run partnership to almost push West Indies out of the game.
This is when Gudakesh Motie used his guile to have Babar Azam stumped for 47 in the 24th over. A few overs later, Roston Chase had Salman Agha caught and bowled in a soft fashion as West Indies started to come back into the game. The skipper, Mohammad Rizwan did get to his fifty in the 35th over but the asking rate started to increase with the debutant Hasan Nawaz also taking his time to get going.
Shai Hope brought back Shamar for a breakthrough and the pacer delivered by trapping Rizwan in front in the 38th over. Yet, Hussain Talat came out with a lot intent and produced a few boundaries to put the pressure back on the hosts. The 40th over bowled by Shamar which went for 17 runs also turned the tide in Pakistanâs favour as they needed only 72 runs off the last 60 balls. Soon, Nawaz also switched gears as Pakistan got into the driverâs seat.
Hasan went onto register his fifty at the end of the 47th over with Gudakesh Motie also dropping him on the 50th run much to Jayden Sealesâ agony. The game seemed to be getting tight but Hussain Talat smashed Jediah Blades in the 48th over which went for 15 runs. Eventually, Nawaz struck a boundary off the 5th ball of the penultimate over to finish unbeaten on 63* (54) as Pakistan got over the line with 7 balls to spare
Earlier in the match, West Indies lost Brandon King in the very first over but Evin Lewis and Keacy Carty steadied the ship with a 77-run partnership. Carty was dismissed for 30 by Sufiyan Muqeem but Lewis went onto make a fifty. Lewisâ time in the middle was brought to an end by Saim Ayub as the southpaw walked back for 60 in the 19th over. Sherfane Rutherford also didnât add much to the scorecard as the West Indies were suddenly reduced to 136/4 after 25.3 overs.
The Pakistani spinners continued to strangle Shai Hope and Roston Chase but the latter struck some timely boundaries to keep the scorecard ticking. Hope got to a slow fifty off 74 balls before he fell to Shaheen Shah Afridi in the process of accelerating. Shaheen also got the better of Romario Shepherd in the 43rd over to pull the West Indies back with old ball. In the meantime, Chase got to his fifty before he perished off Naseem Shahâs bowling for 53. Just as it seemed like the West Indies will fold under 250, Gudakesh Motie played some scintillating shots to add invaluable runs in the back-end of the innings. Motie made 31 runs before Naseem Shah castled him and Jediah Blades to bowl the West Indies out for 280 with an over remaining.
