A tame end to a highly anticipated reverse fixture! Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings are the same franchises that were involved in a game that gave IPL's record run chase in 2024, while the two were involved in a low-scoring thriller this season, which saw PBKS pulling off a miracle defending the lowest ever total in the league.
We have a doubleheader Sunday coming up, with MI hosting LSG at Wankhede in the afternoon game before DC setting the stage at Arun Jaitley Stadium for the re-match against RCB in the evening fixture.
For now, this is me AkshayaKrishna Polya, signing off on behalf of my co-commentators Akshay Bhide and Pritam Dey, who, alongside our scorers Paras Yadav and Raju Khariya and statistician Aman, brought you all the live updates of this game. We will meet again. Until then, it's cheers!
10:57 PM IST and Local Time: Relentless rain and heavy breeze at Eden Gardens have had the final say tonight, with the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings getting abandoned! The cut-off time for a five-over run chase was 11:44 PM, but the storm did not allow enough time for the ground staff to prepare the outfield, forcing the match officials to call off the game after just 21 overs had been completed out of the 40.
Earlier in the evening, PBKS opted to bat first and posted a massive 201/4 in 20 overs. The bulk of the scoring was done by the two young openers, with Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh going hammer and tongs right from ball one. Arya scored a 35-ball 69, with 8 fours and 4 sixes, while Prabhsimran hit a cracking 83 off 49 balls, including 6 fours and as many sixes.
KKR were guilty of bowling too many freebies and also dropped a couple of tough chances on the field, with the Punjab openers adding a record 120-run partnership before Andre Russell's golden arm struck for the hosts, drawing the first blood.
Skipper Shreyas Iyer (25* off 16) struggled to keep going with the momentum provided by the openers, but had Prabhsimran scoring briskly at the other end. Vaibhav Arora ended the right-handed opener's stay at the crease, before the problem of plenty ensured the management to take surprising decisions for the visitors. Glenn Maxwell bagged another failure while Marco Jansen, coming ahead of Shashank Singh, Nehal Wadhera, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Josh Inglis, didn't have any rhythm in his innings.
However, Iyer and Inglis found a couple of boundaries to take the Kings past the 200-run mark. Credit goes to KKR's bowling attack for pulling things back in the death overs. Vaibhav was the pick of the bowlers, grabbing a couple of scalps, while Varun Chakaravarthy and Russell bagged one each. Sunil Narine, Harshit Rana and Chetan Sakariya were quite expensive and were wicketless.
KKR started the chase with a seven-run first over as Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine tried to see off the new ball threat and get a good start in the big run chase before a sudden storm struck Kolkata! Both teams will share a point each, with Punjab Kings moving up to the 4th place, having 11 points from 9 matches, and Kolkata Knight Riders staying seventh on the table, with 7 points from nine outings.
10:42 PM IST, Local Time: Cheers from the fans present in the stadium as the rain has eased off a bit. But it hasn't stopped yet. So, there isn't any activity from the groundsmen. They will start the mopping up work once the rain stops completely.
10:35 PM IST, Local Time: The wind has eased up but it's still raining at the Eden Gardens. Just in case you missed it, we have now started to lose overs. The cut-off time for a 5-over chase is 11:44 PM IST/Local Time.
10 PM IST & Local Time: It's a proper downpour now. The rain has intensified and the covers are firmly in place. Looks like we are in for a longer delay. A lightning as well in the night sky.
9:41 PM IST & Local Time: The conditions are getting tricky with the strong breeze and dust swirling around the stadium. With the covers flying around, itβs uncertain if weβll get back on track soon. Just a reminder, we need at least 5 overs to be bowled in this innings to constitute a match. With the rain coming down lightly, weβll have to see if it passes quickly. Remember, there is a buffer period of 1 hour. We will start losing overs from 10:35 PM IST/Local Time.
