PM Local Time: What a stunning all-round performance from the Birmingham
Phoenix as they register an 7-wicket win with 35 balls to spare. Liam
Livingstone and Jacob Bethell came up with a six-hitting frenzy in the end to
bring an icing on the cake for the home fans.
Chasing 127 for victory, Luke Wood struck Will Smeed's stumps off the second delivery itself but Joe Clarke came out all guns blazing as the Phoenix got to 41/1 at the end of the Powerplay even as Ben Duckett struggled. Duckett was soon put out of his misery as he struck a rank long-hop from Liam Dawson to Kane Williamson at extra-cover.
There was no stopping Clarke though as he reached his fifty off 23 balls. The keeper-batsman did get out soon off Daniel Worrall's bowling but the damage was done by then. At the half-way stage, the Phoenix need 40 more runs and Jacob Bethell signaled his intent with a couple of sixes off Worrall's bowling. After a slow start, Liam Livingstone also cut loose as smacked boundary after boundary with some big sixes included in that. Eventually, the Phoenix skipper struck three sixes in four balls off Gleeson to finish the match with 35 balls to spare.
Earlier in the match, Trent Boult castled Jamie Smith with a beautiful in-swinger in the very set. Then, David Warner struggled for a while before he was dismissed by Liam Livingstone. Skipper Kane Williamson batted steadily for a while with Ollie Pope for company. However, Williamson went back to the hut after failing to execute a scoop shot off Chris Wood just after the half-way mark of the innings. Livingstone also added another scalp as he induced a top-edge off Ollie Pope as Spirit's innings went nowhere.
On the other hand, the Phoenix put on a exhibition of death bowling as the duo of Trent Boult and Adam Milne nailed one yorker after another. Boult and Livingstone ended up with two scalps while Benny Howell and Chris Wood took a wicket apiece with the Spirit finishing up on 126/6 off their 100 balls.
