Jos Buttler (Hero of the Match): "Let a couple of games slip, so had to win to get the momentum. Had to stay patient and not get frustrated if you are not timing the ball. We had set batters and that was crucial. High class players and that is the marker of what you need to put in as a high class team. Had set plans and looked to put pressure on them with the asking rate.
Sonny Baker and Josh Tongue bring pace to the table, Scott Currie is a little bit different while Noor Ahmad brings some X-factor. Really exciting attack. When we put on a performance like that with bat and ball, it is exciting. Really great to see so many fans enjoying a rare sunny day in Manchester."
Jos Buttler has been named as the 'Hero of the Match'.
9:39 PM IST, 5:09 PM local time: Manchester Originals win by 57 runs.
For a batting line-up studded with heavyweights like Salt, Buttler and Klaasen, the returns before today had been grossly underwhelming. For the large part of the first four matches, the Originals failed to sustain momentum through the middle. They were getting the desired sprightly starts, but the lack of form shown by Buttler and Klaasen meant that they struggled to put a big score on the board. Not today though!
Both of those star wicket-keeper batters came to the party. Buttler scored a responsible 65* off 45 balls and Klaasen notched up an entertaining 50* off 25 balls. And hence, despite a poor start today, the hosts were able to notch up an imposing 171/3 off their 100 balls.
Perhaps, it was the exuberance that Rachin Ravindra brought that rubbed onto everyone. His 14-ball-31 was effervescent and riveting. Then, he also delivered the goods with the ball in hand as Manchester Originals handed Northern Superchargers a thrashing.
The visitors were, by no means, out of the contest at the halfway mark. After all, even their line-up consists of stars like Malan, Brook, Miller and Crawley. But some terrific bowling thwarted their ambitions. Perhaps, Crawley is the only one who can say that he got out playing a poor shot. Maybe Brook to an extent. But the rest were routed out by the bowlers.
Josh Tongue was the most impressive. He showed sheer pace β constantly registering readings of 90 mph or thereabouts. And in between would slow it down by almost 20 mph to catch the batters off guard. He picked three wickets. However, it is the other three wicket haul that will be talked about more. Sonny Baker's came off three consecutive deliveries he sent down β albeit spread across different sets β thereby giving him a hat-trick.
What a way to end the match. Bull's eye from Sonny Baker and Jacob Duffy had no chance of negating it. A hat-trick to boot as well for Baker as he took a wicket off the last ball of the previous set.
