That's it from another brilliant encounter in the Women's Premier League! Delhi Capitals move to the top of the table with a thumping win over Mumbai Indians. Ninaad Dixit here signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Deepak Prakash and scorer/analyst Paras Yadav. Stay tuned for more action from around the world.
Jess Jonassen (Player of the Match): "I knew I would be able to put the pressure outside the powerplay, credit to the quicks to put the pressure in the powerplay.
I am happy to hang on to caught and bowled. Made a name for myself for a period for not hanging on to them. Our whole bowling group did a good job. Minnu is an exceptionally talented bowler. I have had conversations with her telling her to be a fraction fuller but not too full. The way she came back was incredible.
That was nice the way Meg and Shafali got through the powerplay was brilliant and then Meg and Jemi to finish the innings. I was happy to put my feet up tonight."
Player of the Match: Jess Jonassen
Meg Lanning (Delhi Capitals Women Captain): "We've had patches where we have done well but haven't put all the facets together. You wanna keep improving throughout the tournament and we feel like we have done it tonight.
We brought some great energy. Our bowlers did well. Shikha was brilliant. We took wickets throughout which certainly helped.
We were touch short in that first over. We had to adjust our lengths. Kappie could do that extremely well. To be able to put them under the pump and then Sutherland coming in the middle with Minnu Mani, she's been bowling extremely well throughout the tournament and picked up a couple of crucial wickets for us as well.
Minnu has got some incredible skills. Some good variations as well. It was an incredible catch from Sutherland. It was an epitome of attacking the ball.
We wanted to go out there and attack the powerplay. Shafali Verma at the other end makes it easier. It's nice to put Mumbai under pressure and not let them back in.
It was a great battle with Ismail. We have played a lot against each other. Those bouncers certainly were pretty quick."
Jemimah Rodrigues (DC Women): "We needed this win. We haven’t been at our best lately, managing to scrape through in some games, but it’s great to get over the line today. Sutherland’s catch and Minnu’s stop in the middle were crucial moments—everything seemed to click, and it felt like we were back on track.
Just keep going. But Meg and Shifu have an incredible understanding of their game. With Meg at the other end, she keeps guiding Shifu to hit straight.
(On celebration after the catch) A WPL season wouldn’t be complete without a floss! I didn't plan it, but the crowd brought great energy today, and I just had to do it! Loved the celebration—it looked really cute!"
Harmanpreet Kaur (Mumbai Indians Women Captain): "Yeah, I think today was one of those days when nothing went our way. With the bat, we couldn’t put up a decent total on the board, and in the field, we struggled to hit the good-length areas we had discussed after the first innings break.
I think we struggled to score runs in the first six overs. After that, we found some rhythm in between, but we couldn’t maintain it. In the end, 120-odd runs weren’t enough, especially against an experienced side. I believe we were definitely 30-40 runs short while batting, and that ultimately cost us while bowling.
I think in the last three games, we did everything right, but today was just one of those days where nothing went our way. That said, we’re still in a good position. My message to the team would be to forget this game and focus on the important matches ahead. When we regroup, we’ll talk about the positives and look to carry that momentum forward."
10:25 PM: A magnificent victory for the Delhi Capitals over Mumbai Indians at Bengaluru. A 9-wicket win with 33 balls to spare! Couldn't ask more as a team effort, well led by the experienced Meg Lanning taking them to the top of the points table!
Lanning flipped the coin in her favor and opted to bowl first. Harmanpreet Kaur and Hayley Matthews top scored with 22 each but the Mumbai lineup failed to build partnerships and managed 123/9 in 20 overs.
Minnu Mani picked up 3/17, Jess Jonassen looked brilliant with 3/25. Shikha Pandey was at her vintage best with 4-1-16-1 and the athletic Annabel Sutherland bowled her 4 overs for 1/21 before taking one of the greatest outfield grabs in the season.
Chasing the low score, WPL's finest opening partnership made it look like a walk in the park. Shafali Verma (43 off 28) smashed 4 fours and 3 sixes adding 85 runs for the opening wicket in just 9.5 overs before holing out in the deep off Amanjot Kaur's bowling.
Meg Lanning displayed her class scoring briskly off the backfoot. She scored an unbeaten 60 taking 49 balls and sprinkled 9 boundaries all around the park. Jemimah Rodrigues promoted up at number 3 helped the skipper chase the total with 15 off 10 balls.
Shabnim Ismail was fantastic and accurate with the ball delivering plenty of deliveries north of 120 kph in her 4-over effort of 0/26. Amanjot bowled 2 overs for 1/12, Matthews bowled a tidy 2-over spell but the Mumbai side didn't just have enough runs to display some fight.
