2:00 AM IST, 9:30 PM local time: Durham win by 15 runs.
Often in life and sport, it is about hanging in there and fighting it out even when everything seems stacked up against you. That is exactly what Jimmy Neesham and Durham did tonight. Until now, Durham's T20 campaign had moved along like an old, broken-down car — stuttering at every mile of the way. Their opposition was the team that had won six in six and looked good to win this one too for good while. But the visitors hung in and in the end, secured a victory that they should be proud of. The aforementioned New Zealander was the protagonist, as he has been for Durham throughout this competition.
Tonight, he wasn't at his fluent best. He came out to bat when the side was reeling at 77/5. Neesham struggled to find his timing on a pitch that appeared two paced. But he hung in, ground out and eventually scored a fifty — not a pretty one but an important one.
Riding on it, Durham scored 157/8 in 20 overs. But for a good while, it seemed as if the Steelbacks would chase it down with some time to spare. Ricardo Vasconcelos had got them off to a flyer. At the other end, Breetzke looked solid too. With 56/1 on the board at the end of the powerplay, the home team was in the driver's seat. But then, the spinners came on to bowl and strangled them. Between themselves, Callum Parkinson and Nathan Sowter returned 3/28 from 6 overs and brought the match back to parity.
However, with the experience of Ravi Bopara and the confidence of Justin Broad — who put in a laudable all-round performance today — out in the middle, Northamptonshire were still not out of it. But again, in the 18th over Neesham turned the tide by dismissing the veteran and following it up with the wicket of Lewis McManus the next ball. In the next over, Ben Raine — who had accounted for the wicket of Vasconcelos earlier — got Broad out and suddenly, it was Durham's game to lose.
We all thought that a climax was about looming when, with 21 runs left, Neesham started the final over with a beamer. Yet, the all-rounder held his nerve, stuck to his plan and eventually, only gave away five runs, handing Northampton their first defeat.

19.6 J Neesham to L Pope
1 Very full, at the fourth peg, hit straight to the man at cover, who picks it up but does not throw. That allows Pope a run but it barely matters. Durham have won this by 15 runs and Northamptonshire, after winning six matches on a trot have finally been handed their first defeat.
19.5 J Neesham to L Pope
0 Hard length delivery at the fourth peg. Pope pokes at thin air.
