After losing two matches in a row, Durham bounce back to pip the Falcons and win four important points that will help them climb the ranks in the points table. Meanwhile, Derbyshire's lean run in T20s continues. Remember, they have not lost a red ball game all summer, but cannot seem to find a break in the shortest format. Five losses in five games for them now.
It was one of those rare T20 matches, where the bowler seemed to have the upper hand for the most part. Derbyshire's spinners set the tone. The Durham openers couldn't decode the Ghazanfar mystery. To make up, they went after Hudson-Prentice who bowled the fourth over of the match and conceded 12 runs off it. But then, the pacer came back to deliver three tight overs including a stupendous 20th, off which only three runs were made.
For the home team, Sowter delivered a top spell. He kept it simple — wicket to wicket, not looking to spin the ball big — and was rewarded with the crucial wickets of Samit Patel and Caleb Jewell. The other Durham spinner Callum Parkinson took a bit of a tap but bowled the ball of the day that accounted for Guest's dismissal.
Another man who impressed was Ben Raine, who bowled within himself and made scoring tough for the batters. Jimmy Neesham was obviously the pick of the bowlers, as he has been throughout the tournament.
Amidst the batters, Ollie Robinson stood head and shoulders above all. He looked purposeful from the offset. His shot selection was wise and ball striking robust. He scored 70 (off 46 balls) in the total of 168/6. Derbyshire too needed one of their batters to do something similar. Alas, nobody could and they seemed behind the 8-ball from very early in the run chase. Caleb Jewell's 33 was impressive but he could not convert it into something big. Madsen's 37 was anything but fluent. In the end, the visitors fell 16 runs short — which is a healthy margin in a T20 game.
