So, that is it from myself, Karthik Raj, my co-commentator, Darpan and our scorer for this match, Dushyant Madhukar. Do stay tuned to our overall cricket coverage with a lot more cricketing action coming later today.
01:50 AM IST & 09:20 PM IST: It was inevitable given the rain-fall and we have the confirmation that the game has been called off. So, both teams will share points. Kent still unbeaten while Middlesex finally open their tally for the season with these two points.
1:15 AM IST, 8:45 PM local time: Still pouring down. We have been told that the cut-off for a 5-over run chase is 9:26 PM local time (1:56 AM IST).
12:56 AM IST, 8:26 PM local time: Alas, the sky has started leaking again. The pitch is under cover and the start of the second innings is delayed.
12:41 AM IST, 8:11 PM local time: Kent have scored 172/9 in 20 overs. Middlesex need 173 runs to win.
The background — with dark, angry clouds looming overhead — might be murky. But the cricket that has unfolded in the middle thus far has been enthralling to watch. Largely because the pitch being used for this game is a sporting one. The bounce seems fairly even, the odd ball has turned and the overcast conditions have aided a bit of swing too — nothing alarming, but just enough to make the ball wobble.
There was no dearth of intent from the Kent batters. However, poor execution did most of them. But what was particularly riveting to watch was the fact that the fall of wickets did not deter them from throwing their bat around.
Alas, most individuals did not convert their starts into scores of substance. The only score of note was that of Zak Crawley, who went about his business in a familiar effervescent manner. However, there was caution and maturity mixed just in the right proportion today. Albeit, it all fell apart after he reached his fifty. In trying to hit mode turbo, he ended up hitting one to Ryan Higgins at long-on, who took a fantastic catch at the brink of the boundary.
That brings us to Middlesex's fielding, which was of pretty high standard. Williamson's diving stops inside the 30-yard circle and Geddes' direct hit to run Benjamin out were the other highlights. Wicket-keeper Davies did make a fumble, but he recovered just in time to stump Denly out on the very same ball.
Barring Cornwell, every bowler who rolled his arm over found a wicket at least. Seamer Tom Helm and leg spinner Luke Hollman picked three each. Other noteworthy happenings from the first innings were a wrongly called no-ball and a wrongly called wide by umpire Ben Debenham.
