11:17 pm IST, 6:47 pm local time: Sussex have trounced Gloucestershire by 80 runs in what became an extremely one-sided T20 Blast encounter as the game progressed.
Having put their opponents in to bat first, Gloucestershire were in all sorts of trouble while chasing a challenging but getable 173 right from the get-go as Ollie Robinson (1/11 off 3 overs) and Brad Currie got the ball rolling for Sussex. Gloucestershire kept on losing wickets at regular intervals through a combination of rash shots and prudent bowling. Skipper Tymal Mills (3/13 off 2.3 overs) was the pick of the bowlers for Sussex as his pointed pace attack proved too good for an already beleaguered Gloucestershire batting. They were five down below fifty in the seventh over. and despite some rearguard hitting from James Bracey (24 off 15), were never in the chase as the required run rate kept on climbing and wickets kept on tumbling. Miles Hammond, opening the batting, also got to 24 before throwing away his wicket, not unlike many of his teammates. Gloucestershire were all out for a measly 93. Spinners James Coles and Jack Carson also got two wickets apiece for a Sussex attack on top.
Earlier, having been given the task of batting first, Sussex were in a bit of a bother having lost three wickets in the powerplay. But a fine partnership between Coles (43 off 27), and the big-hitting Tom Alsop (58 off 35), really set the tone of the innings. The two tonked the bowling to all corners of the ground with disdain, and at one point of time they seemed set to cross 200. The two batters combined to hit six sixes and as many boundaries. But once they departed in quick succession Gloucestershire pulled things back remarkably to restrict them to 173. Opening the batting, Daniel Hughes had raced to 34 before a fine catch had seen the back of him. David Payne (3/24) with his left-arm pace, was the pick of the bowlers for Gloucestershire, while Matt Taylor also got three but was a tad expensive.
However, it was their failing with the willow that led to Sussex cantering to an easy win.
