That's all from this contest, folks! Bengal held their nerve at the crucial point and sealed their spot in the quarter-finals. Time to wrap up this coverage. For now, it's me Deepak Prakash signing off on behalf of co-commentator Saptak Sanyal and scorer/analyst Manish Bishnoi. CHEERS!
Sudip Kumar Gharami (Bengal Captain):"When we were batting, we thought we were 20-25 runs short. Our batters didn't carry forward well but that's okay. Our confidence will go upwards as our bowlers have bowled really well throughout the tournament."
Sayan Ghosh (Player of the Match): "I feel great about winning the knockout game, and itβs especially satisfying to defend 160 runs on this ground. Shami bhai gave us a strong start in the second innings. Also, his crucial runs with the bat helped us to post a decent total on the board."
Player of the Match: Sayan Ghosh
Manan Vohra (Chandigarh Captain):"To be honest, the way we bowled I thought we will restrict them to 125. Shami batted really well to take the score to 160. We wanted to use the moisture and we did it.
The guy who bowled the last over executed really well. The pitch got better in the second innings and we were going well. But it was not our day."
Time for the post-match presentations.
2:26 PM IST, Local Time: A gruelling battle between bat and ball, and Bengal narrowly sneak through with a 3-run victory over Chandigarh to qualify for the quarter-finals. It would be fair enough to say that Shami's valuable runs proved vital for the Bengal side.
Earlier, after being invited to bat first, Bengal got off to a shaky start as Jagjit Singh exploited the conditions very well and wreaked havoc with the new ball, removing Abishek Porel (8), Sudip Kumar Gharami (0), and Shakir Habib Gandhi (10) inside the powerplay. Writtick Chatterjee came out all guns blazing and scored rapidly, but Raj Bawaβs good presence of mind trapped the right-hander for 28 runs and ended his cameo. Karan Lal held his wicket from one end but Bengal kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Karan tried to break free and in the process he perished for 33 runs, putting Bengal in deep waters. Pradipta Pramanik and Mohammed Shami added crucial runs at the tail end of the innings, but the former departed for 30 runs at the crucial juncture, and it looked like Bengal would be all out before 20 overs. However, Shami took matters into his own hands and smashed a few crucial boundaries in the last couple of overs of the innings. He remained unbeaten on 32 runs, his highest T20 score, and propelled Bengal to 159/9 in 20 overs. Jagjit Singh starred with the ball for Chandigarh, claiming 4 crucial wickets. Raj Bawa bagged a couple of wickets, while Nikhil Sharma, Amrit Lubana, and Bhagmender Lather contributed one wicket each. In pursuit of 159 runs, Chandigarh started their innings on a lacklustre note, losing Arslan Khan (0), Shivam Bhambri (14), and Amrit Lubana (14) cheaply. Manan Vohra managed to hold his wicket for a while but struggled to score briskly and eventually, departed for 23 runs off 24 balls, falling prey to Shahbaz Ahmed. Raj Bawa and Pradeep Yadav started the rescue mission and steadied the ship for a while. However, Kanishk Seth got the better of Pradeep, dismissing him for 27 runs and breaking the 45-run partnership.
Bawa was well-set at the crease and looked poised to seal the game for his side, but unfortunately, he perished for 32 runs at a crucial juncture. Jagjit Singh paired up with Nikhil Sharma, smashing 12 valuable runs off 7 balls, but was run out in the final over as he tried to take the strike, with Nikhil remaining rooted to his crease. This proved to be the turning point, as Nikhil also failed to score the required 8 runs off 3 balls and was dismissed for 22 runs on the penultimate ball.
Sayan Ghosh bowled brilliantly in the final over, defending 11 runs and helping Bengal win by a razor-thin margin of 3 runs. He bagged 4 wickets in his 4-over quota and conceded 30 runs. Kanishk Seth chipped in with a couple of wickets, while Mohammed Shami and Shahbaz Ahmed contributed one wicket to Chandigarh's downfall.
