1:38 AM IST, 9:08 PM Local Time: That’s it. Sussex Sharks start their T20 Blast 2025 campaign on a winning note at the ‘Home of Cricket’. Their batters set the tone early in the game by posting a formidable total on the board before their bowlers stepped up and defended it. Middlesex tried hard but fell short by 16 runs in front of their home crowd.
Chasing 203, Middlesex got off to a steady start. Kane Williamson opened the batting on his debut for the club and scored 14 before holing out in the deep. Skipper Stephen Eskinazi looked scratchy at the crease and scored a 30-ball 34 before departing in the 11th over. Leus du Plooy (11) and Jack Davies (7) fell in quick succession.
Ben Geddes, batting at three, kept fighting and brought up his fifty off 35 balls. Luke Hollman (20 off 9) played a decent cameo but fell at the start of the 17th over. Ryan Higgins came out all guns blazing and played some outstanding strokes. He hit some lusty blows to keep his side in the hunt.
Higgins scored 20 in the 19th over to bring the equation down to 21 from six. Geddes fell on 51 on the very first ball of the final over. Higgins was off strike for most part of the over and he got cleaned up on 16-ball 44 when he got strike on the fifth ball. Middlesex finished their innings on 186/7 as they lost the game by 16 runs. Ollie Robinson was impressive with the ball for the Sharks, registering figures of 3/27. Bradley Currie (2/38) and skipper Tymal Mills (2/54) chipped in with two scalps each as they defended the total successfully.
Earlier, Sussex were asked to bat first. They lost Harrison Ward (6) cheaply. John Simpson at three played a good cameo of 12-ball 22 before falling in the fifth over. Daniel Hughes looked good at the crease and scored 38 off 20 while opening the batting before getting run out on 20-ball 38. James Coles at four held the innings nicely for Sussex.
Tom Alsop scored a run-a-ball 18 before getting trapped in front of the stumps. Coles continued going strong and raced past his fifty. He received good support from Tom Clark (26*). Coles’ 44-ball 77* powered Sussex to 202/4. Zafar Gohar, Noah Cornwell and Luke Hollman grabbed a wicket each for Middlesex. The hosts then tried hard with the bat but they fell short by 16 runs to start their campaign with a loss.
