That's all from the inaugural match of the BPL 11, folks! Fortune Barishal start their campaign on a high note. For now, this is Deepak Prakash signing off on behalf of scorer/analyst Paras Yadav. CHEERS!
Tamim Iqbal (Fortune Barishal Captain): "I thought the wicket was extremely good to start with. On any other day, I would have bowled first, but since it was the first game of the tournament, I wasnāt too sure.
However, I knew it was going to be a really good wicket before we took the field. A lot of credit goes to the way Yasir Ali battedāit was an incredible innings. The quality of shots he played was truly exceptional. I really canāt find much fault with my bowlers, apart from a few deliveries here and there. It was quality bowling overall. And to be 50 or 60 for 5, then chase it down with almost two overs to spareāunbelievable!
Oh, yeah, definitely. When you have one goal as a unit, you donāt give up. We made some very smart tactical changes in the batting order, which really helped. Promoting Shaheen gave us a crucial cameo just when we needed it. Then there was Faheem stepping in where we had Nabi. Nabi should have batted much higher up the order, but given the situation, it worked out well. The depth we have in this team is fantastic."
Mahmudullah Riyad (Player of the Match): "First of all, Iād like to thank the Almighty Allah for giving me the strength to deliver this kind of innings for the team. I think it was a great start, especially since we needed one at the beginning of the tournament. It was truly a fantastic team effort. Alongside me, Shaheen played a crucial knock, and Faheemās innings was absolutely brilliant as well.
I think it was a belter of a wicket. That said, we needed to execute our plans and pace the innings really well. As you mentioned, we required 15 runs per over, so we didnāt have the luxury of building the innings. We just had to go hard and swing the bat as hard as we could.
I want to say one more thingāmy son is hospitalized. Raeed, this is for you, and Iāll see you soon. Baba loves you."
Player of the Match: Mahmudullah Riyad
Time for the post-match presentation....
Anamul Haque (Durbar Rajshahi Captain): "Yes, it was a winning score, but Barishal is a fantastic side. Mahmudullah and Faheem Ashraf batted exceptionally well. We tried to execute our plans but couldnāt succeed, and weāll aim to improve in the upcoming matches. Taskin bowled very well, and the momentum was there, but when the batter is set, it's very tough to contain runs."
4:39 PM IST, 5:09 PM Local Time: PHEW! Ferocious hitting from Mahmudullah and Faheem Ashraf sealed the game for the defending champions, who won by 4 wickets, starting their campaign in style.
Earlier, after being invited to bat first, Durbar Rajshahi got off to a shaky start as they lost both their openers Mohammad Haris (13) and Jishan Alam (0) cheaply, with Kyle Mayers grabbing both wickets. Anamul Haque paired up with Yasir Ali and smashed a few boundaries in quick succession to put the batting back on track. Anamul switched gears as the innings progressed, notching up his fifty in style. Inspired by him, Yasir also stepped on the accelerator and pummeled the bowlers to all corners of the park. The partnership between the duo surpassed 100 runs before the Rajshahi skipper departed for 65. However, Yasir continued his onslaught, remaining unbeaten on 94 and guiding his side to a total close to 200. Kyle Mayers bagged a couple of wickets for Barishal, while Faheem Ashraf celebrated a solitary wicket.
In pursuit of 197 runs, Fortune Barishal got off to a shaky start, losing Najmul Hossain Shanto on the very first ball of the innings and continuing to lose wickets at regular intervals, leaving them three down for 30 runs inside the powerplay.
Towhid Hridoy chipped in with 32 runs and steadied the ship for a while but failed to convert it into a big score. Shaheen Afridi was promoted to number 7 and the ploy worked for Barishal, as the left-hander forged a 50+ runs partnership along with Mahmudullah and smashed 27 runs off 17 balls and kept the run rate in check.
Durbar Rajshahi were well ahead in the game, but Mahmudullah and Faheem Ashraf had other plans. The pair went berserk at the tail end of the innings, raining boundaries at the venue. Mahmudullah brought up his fifty and remained unbeaten on 56, while Faheem sealed the game in style with a maximum, completing his fifty and finishing with 11 balls to spare.
Durbar Rajshahi leaked too many runs in the death overs and failed to defend 197 runs. Taskin Ahmed bagged three wickets for them, while Hasan Murad and Jishan Alam chipped in with 2 and 1 wickets respectively.
