That marks the end of our coverage from the 7th Super Smash game of this edition between Central Stags and Wellington Firebirds. Firebirds kept their nerves and went on to get the victory.
For now, this is Saptak Sanyal signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Soumarya Dutta and our scorer/analyst Ghanendra Singh Thakur.
Nick Kelly (Wellington Firebirds Captain):"The powerplay was really important. Getting the power in the shots was important for me and the credit goes to Josh Hartshorn for his performance. Players like Tim and Abbas helps you to win the game.
We knew that they have a good depth with their lower order batting and glad that we took the wickets. First game in Basin will be nice and hope the rain stays away."
Tom Bruce (Central Stags Captain)- " We did well but the fall of wickets at the top and the back end hurt us. It was a great effort from the boys. Angus and Lennox bowled really well in the middle overs. We still have a game in a couple of day and we will look to see as to where we can improve and put up a much better performance. "
James Hartshorn (Player of the Match):"I was little bit surprised that I got the executions right. It is a good feeling to play with these guys and performing. It feels good. It was great bowling in the last over. I am looking forward to the rest of the season with these boys."
Player of the Match: James Hartshorn
12:06 PM IST and 7:36 PM Local Time- The Central Stags have been bowled out for 179 runs exactly in their 20 overs and this has been incredible game of cricket. It ebbed and flowed from one end to the other in the last five overs and in the end, it was Logan van Beek, who bowled an outstanding penultimate over to bring the Wellington back into the game.
The Central Stags had a good start in the powerplay but they also lost a bunch of wickets. Curtis Heaphy and Dane Cleaver were dismissed off back to back deliveries by James Hartshorn. Tom Bruce came in and played his strokes making use of the field restrictions. However Logan van Beek dismissed him for 24. The Stags put on 52 runs in the powerplay for the loss of three wickets.
Jack Boyle got himself in and continued to play his strokes. He found some able company in Josh Clarkson and together the duo put up more than 50 runs for the fourth wicket. The Wellington side tried to create the pressure and used the spinners, Tashkoff and Younghusband to run through the overs.
The latter picked up a couple of wickets including Clarkson and Boyle. Heading into the final five overs of the innings, the Central Stags needed 68 runs to win and they had two new batters at the crease. Angus Schaw targeted the spinners and the Stags picked up two massive overs back to back and reduced the equation within their reach with just two overs to go.
However, it was van Beek first and then Hartshorn who combined to pick up five wickets in a span of just 12 balls and cleaned up the lower order. Hartshorn picked up five wickets by giving away just 24 runs and Younghusband also picked up a couple of wickets.
