Max Chu (Game Changer of the Match and Otago Volts Captain):"We got the powerplay well and took the chances afterwards. It got a pretty hot. It was a belter of a wicket and it was conducive to play the shots.
Credit goes to our spinners. Dean Foxcroft, Ben Lockrose, Dale Phillips did well for his five balls. It is good to get an idea of the pitch ahead of our next clash on Sunday against the Aces."
12:17 PM IST and 7:47 PM Local Time | Canterbury Kings were outplayed by the Otago Volts and the latter started the season with a 10-run victory. After getting a good start, the Kings failed to keep the momentum and lost the game as their lower middle order failed to contribute.
Kyle Jamieson was phenomenal with the new ball as he got better of the two openers of Otago. Dale Phillips and Jamal Todd were his victims. But the skipper Max Chu decided to take on the Kings' bowlers. He got a little support from Dean Foxcroft who scored 12 off 17 balls and Llew Johnson got out in the very next ball.
Chu continued to hit boundaries despite the wickets and he got Carter by his side. Together they stitched a good partnership where Carter contributed 35 off 28 balls. Max Chu got his best score in the T20 format as he scored 82 runs off 46 balls with 7 fours and 3 maximums. Jake Gibson played a good cameo of 12 runs to help his side go past the 160-run mark.
For Canterbury Kings, Cole McConchie, Angus McKenzie and Kyle Jamieson took a couple of wickets each. Henry Shipley and Michael Rae took one wicket each.
Coming to chase the 166-run target, Canterbury Kings were off to a good start as Chad Bowes hit the debutant Clarke for a few boundaries. But Clarke got better of him on 24 off 11 balls with 4 fours and 1 six. Ben Lockrose removed Tom Latham in the very next ball and the Kings were in trouble. Matthew Boyle and skipper Cole McConchie were up with the task and they started taking their team to a comfortable position.
Cole McConchie was batting well but he got out for 49. Ben Lockrose denied him the fifty. He faced 34 balls hitting 3 fours and 2 maximums. After his wicket, nobody stood firm for the Canterbury in the lower middle order. Ish Sodhi came to bat at number 9 and played a good cameo of 23 runs facing 14 balls but as he got out, the dreams shattered for the Kings. They eventually lost the match by 10 runs.
Ben Lockrose and Dean Foxcroft were spot-on with their lines and bowled very well through the middle over phase to cramp the batters. They claimed 2 wickets each. Andrew Hazeldine was way too economical as he gave just 19 runs away from his 4 overs. Matthew Bacon took 2 wickets for 33 runs. The combined bowling effort from them restricted Canterbury to 155 even after a good start.
1W A low full toss at the fourth stump. Shipley mistimes his heave towards deep extra cover. Shipley goes for a single and the fielder collects to throw it at the bowler's end. Bacon takes the bails off at ease and TV umpire's replay shows that Rae's bat was well outside of the crease. A run out to end the game and Otago Volts start the season with a 10-run victory over Canterbury Kings.
19.5 M Bacon to M Rae
1lb This game is just a formality now. Otago Volts need a legal delivery to win the game. Full delivery outside off. Rae moves off side for room but misses to connect. It goes to point off his pads and it's a leg-bye run.
