That is the end of a whirlwind Melbourne Derby and the Marcus Stoinis-led side stays alive in the competition with a comprehensive win against the Renegades. More action will follow on our platform and don't forget to switch tabs.
For now, this is me, AkshayaKrishna Polya, signing off on behalf of scorer/analyst Paras Yadav, who brought you all the live action of this thrilling contest. We will meet again. Until then, its cheers!
Glenn Maxwell (POTM): "I am just so glad we could get over the line and get two points.
There is a lot of emotion going through when you are 6 or 7 down and don't have too many on the board. You start thinking about whether the season is done, such a wild night, and you are happy to get the job done.
Slogging is always hard, especially at the back end of the innings and much more tiring than running between the wickets (chuckles). The outfield is extremely heavy, but I will be fine.
I was pretty clear on what I wanted to do and how many balls I needed to target in the over. If I could take it deeper, there would not be as much movement, and I could cash in. I had to try and find a single off the last ball. I had plenty of gaps. I knew if I could take it deeper, the ball older, it wouldn't be moving much.
The outfield was a little slower, so I had to find a different way as I needed to hit more balls in the air and send it for sixes than hitting grounded shots for boundaries."
Player of the Match: Glenn Maxwell
5:15 PM IST and 10:45 PM Local Time: What a night at the Marvel Stadium as the Stars win the Melbourne Derby to win four on the bounce to leap to the fourth place on the points table with a 42-run thumping victory over the cross-town rivals!
The Stars stay undefeated in 2025 after losing five consecutive BBL outings in 2024 and continue their dominance in the Derby! They do get off the bottom, but they have only one game left in the season.
Put into bat first under the closed roof of Melbourne, the Marcus Stoinis-led side was reeling at 75/7 at one stage, but Glenn Maxwell was still there at the crease, and it's not over until the Big Show is done. He took matters into his own hands and kept the strike for most of the innings, slamming 4 fours and 10 sixes in his majestic knock of 90 from 52 balls. One of the sixes had 122m distance on it, making the Gades stumble on the field.
Maxwell single-handedly shifted the momentum of the Derby but the Gades managed to knock out all 10 wickets of the Stars, who finished on 165 in exactly 20 overs.
For the Renegades, Tom Rogers, Kane Richardson, Fergus O'Neill and Adam Zampa grabbed two wickets each. At the same time, Jacob Bethell, who was forced into the attack in the 19th over, broke the big 8th wicket partnership between Maxi and Usama Mir, who threw his wicket away for which Maxwell was seriously upset.
The Stars took the momentum with them in the defense and boy, they rattled the hosts consistently from the get-go. None of them could get going or play a freak knock like Maxwell did, as they eventually bundled for just 123 in 19.5 overs.
Mark Stekeete (5/17), who struggled with his first few balls, breathed fire and completed an excellent five-wicket haul, being the pick of the bowlers for the Stars. Joel Paris (3/13), who swung the new ball, did most of the damage in the Power Surge to shut all possible doors for the home team.
The 40-year-old Peter Siddle spitted venom and finished his spell with figures of 4-1-13-1. Beau Webster picked up the final wicket to fall for the Gades, but not before Kane Richardson and Fergus O'Neill dragged it until the very end.
Stay tuned for the presentation...
-The 81-run stand between Glenn Maxwell and Usama Mir has been the record partnership in BBL for the 8th wicket.
-Melbourne Stars hammered 90 runs after the fall of the 7th wicket, which is yet another BBL record.
