Marcus Stoinis (Player of the Match): "Yeah I mean it's a big relief to start the new year with a win. Really proud of the group. This is something I have been talking about. Keep the belief and trust the basics. It has paid off today.

(On the 4th wicket partnership being a record breaking one for the Stars in BBL) I mean I didn't know that. Well partnerships are always key to win matches. We were talking about it at the middle. I was trying to keep him calm and he was doing the same to me.

Yeah look I think I have been disappointed with my performances so far in the season. As a leader you want to step up for your side. I have worked really hard but if you don't get runs, it doesn't matter. That was the blueprint for me.

(On making the playoffs) Absolutely there is a chance to make it to the Finals. We have to chill out and then take one game at a time."

5:08 PM IST & 9:38 PM Local Time| Finally! The 8-game losing streak comes to an end for the Melbourne Stars who have won their first game of this season! A perfect start to 2025 for the Marcus Stoinis-led side. Two losses on the trot for the Brisbane Heat at home!

Earlier in the day, The Melbourne Stars made the most of favorable bowling conditions after electing to field first. Joel Paris and Mark Steketee were breathing fire with the new ball. Mark Steketee dismissed Tom Banton (13) and Colin Munro (1) during the powerplay, leaving the Brisbane Heat in an early trouble.

The wickets continued to tumble as the Heat struggled to form partnerships, with half their side back in the pavilion for just 68 runs. Marcus Stoinis marshalled his bowlers brilliantly, maintaining relentless pressure.

However, Max Bryant turned the tide for the Heat with a stunning knock under pressure. Batting at number 5, he smashed an unbeaten 77 off 48 balls, lifting his side to a competitive total. Mark Steketee (2/42) was the standout performer with the ball for the Stars. Brisbane Heat finished off with 149/7 from their 20 overs.

In reply, the Melbourne Stars got off to a horrid start with the bat yet again. Ben Duckett was dismissed in the first delivery of the innings. Stars lost their top three back in the hut in no time.

Marcus Stoinis (62) and Daniel Lawrence (64*) forged a game-changing 4th wicket partnership for the Melbourne Stars. The duo initially focused on settling at the crease, rotating the strike to rebuild the innings. As their confidence grew, they accelerated, with Stoinis taking calculated risks while Lawrence anchored by rotating the strike.

Their 132-run stand was not only a match-winning effort but also the second highest 4th-wicket partnership in Melbourne Stars' BBL history. Bartlett's sensational figures of 4/10 went in vain. They have finally won a game of cricket. The 8-game losing streak has come to an end as the Melbourne Stars have clinched their first win of the season by 5 wickets and with 11 balls to spare.
