Milestone
That's it from a brilliant and well fought Test series with hosts Pakistan finishing victorious by 2-1. Ninaad Dixit here signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Deepak Prakash and scorer/analyst Dushyant Madhukar Kumar. Stay tuned for more cricketing action from around the world.
Shan Masood (Pakistan Captain): "The first win came after a long time and it was backed up after a series win which is special. This group, the management and the board what they have been through the last 2 weeks, that means a lot to everyone to stand up and still give their best at the ground and that means a lot. At the end of the day its about characters, its people you can trust, who can bleed for you and Sajid literally bled for us yesterday so to be here standing as the winning team that's the most special thing that can happen to us. Saud Shakeel's knock is one of the best I have seen in Test cricket. To have that nerve to take 70 singles. To Sajid and Nauman, they keep taking wickets together. People like Zahid Mahmood giving their all in the boundary, Aamer Jamal not bowling, creating a world record of probably the only seamer to not bowl a single over in the last 2 matches but its the small efforts combined with the big efforts that count and the message to the boys is clear, if we do the small things right like saving those runs in the field and running those extra runs. Little things turn into big things. The biggest point of satisfaction is that we ourselves had a change in conditions. We played in the UAE but it wasn't as challenging in the first few days. In UAE the match went quickly from day 3 but here it was challenging from day 1 in the last two matches. For us its adapting to different conditions and that's heartening, we have squad depth. We have good seamers as well so now we as a side - the onus is on us to make sure we keep taking 20 wickets but again I keep saying it. Bowlers will always win you Test matches by picking up 20 wickets but our first innings batting this year has been superb and everyone from 1 to 11 can take credit for it. We've posted scores that have set games for us and now that we've started picking 20 wickets up we have had a couple of results as well. For me the biggest thing is progress, leaving Pakistan cricket in good hands, doing justice to the job which comes with huge responsibilities. Its heartening to see young players come in and then seniors like Nauman coming back in. People like Salman and Saud have grown in statures as leaders. Rizwan's been brilliant. Its about the whole team how it can go forward. We had encouraging signs but against Bangladesh we couldn't convert those into wins. Its about characteristics and response. I thought I didn't reach the pitch of the ball but you have good bats to take it to the boundary. We would like to dedicate this win to the people of Pakistan who have been through a lot cricket wise. I hope we can have fuller houses, thank you to the England cricket team, we hope to play more and probably 5 Test matches instead of 3."
Ben Stokes (England Captain): "Yeah, it’s obviously disappointing to lose games and series. We faced some challenges in these last two matches, but we just weren't able to meet them. Full credit to Pakistan for the way they played in those games. Next time we encounter challenges in all their different shapes and forms around the world, we need to be ready. In a few weeks, we’ll face more challenges in New Zealand, so we’ll have to try to match those as well. You know, summer finished late for us at home. We had guys playing in some one-day cricket series before we came out here. But the lads train incredibly hard. We're always working on our game and striving to improve. However, when you get out in the middle, it’s a completely different experience. The pressures of Test match cricket can never compare to training. All we can do is work hard and do our best to become better players. That’s certainly what we always aim to do. Yeah, definitely. Whether you perform well or not as you would like, you should always try to take the positives from the experience. Regardless of the result here, there have been some incredible individual performances from certain players in our team throughout the series. Looking ahead to our upcoming tour in New Zealand and into the summer, there’s certainly a lot to take away from this. Yeah, I think so. When you consider that aspect, it’s great to see Rehan and Bash (Bashir) playing Test cricket again, especially in front of their families. We know how much that means to both of them. For their parents to be there, watching their sons play Test cricket and perform well is something truly special. Both are incredibly talented cricketers."
Sajid Khan (Player of the Series): "All the lads performed really well. I was making a comeback but there was no pressure as the team was united and we play domestic cricket on the same surfaces. I am very funny off the field. The team's morale gets boosted if I am also the same on the field. On the Multan surface you didn't have to do much something or the other was happening. In this Test we trusted the process and hit right lengths to succeed. Nauman is one of the most experienced players in domestic cricket. We should share the player of the series award, he gives me lots of advice as well. Congratulations to entire Pakistan."
Player of the Series: Sajid Khan
Saud Shakeel (Player of the Match): "It was tough looking at the conditions but I was mentally clear and stuck to my plans. There isn't much work as a vice-captain but I enjoy opportunities, I do not stress. I enjoy more playing the fast bowlers but its more important to score runs. The way Nauman and Sajid batted, they dominated more than me, all credit goes to them."
