That's all we have for you from the afternoon game between South Africa Women and West Indies Women. You can switch tabs now as we have the second game starting pretty soon between India Women and New Zealand Women. This is Pritam Dey, signing off, on behalf of Akshay Bhide and scorer Raju Khariya.
Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa Women Captain): "Not that easy to bat to be honest, definitely one of the toughest knocks I have played.

Yeah at some stage we were 7 minutes down so I wanted to operate with the spinners to get through the overs quickly and somehow managed to get it just on time.

Yeah, I think it was an impressive performance overall. Kapp bowled brilliantly at the starts, best figures for Mlaba in the middle phase and also to chase down the target by 10 wickets was pretty pleasing."
Hayley Matthews (West Indies Women Captain): "It was a disappointing game and not the way we would have liked to start the tournament. We have to bounce back quickly before the next game which is in two days time. It's about finding the pieces and getting back.

They bowled really well. We weren't able to bat with a higher strike rate throughout the innings and that was the key point in the game

Hopefully, Zaida will be fit for the next game. She got hit on the face while stopping the ball. A small cut maybe. But hopefully, she will be fit."

Nonkululeko Mlaba (Player of the Match): "Thank you so much. This is very special for me, I know I am playing for all the people back in South Africa and also my family is always supporting me so it feels good.

Well for me it was always to bowl stump to stump and it did really work out for me. Also happy from the contributions by the other bowlers.

(On Laura Wolvaardt & Tazmin Brits) Yeah I was watching the game from the dressing room as it was so hot outside. I was cheering for them at every run and really happy to win the opening game."

6:31 PM IST, 5:01 PM Local Time: That’s it. South Africa Women, the runners-up of the previous edition of the T20 World Cup start their campaign on a winning note. They beat the West Indies Women by 10 wickets and put up a clinical performance in their opening game of this edition of the T20 World Cup. The Caribbean side has been outplayed today and will have to get back to the drawing board quickly.

The South African bowlers did a fine job to restrict the West Indies Women to 118. Chasing it, skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits started positively. The West Indies Women failed to create inroads with the new ball as the scoreboard at the end of the powerplay read 43/0. Wolvaardt kept finding regular boundaries and received very good support from Brits.

Both Wolvaardt and Brits kept the required run rate under check and didn’t allow the Caribbean side to get in the game. Wolvaardt brought up her fifty off 45 balls. Brits also got to her fifty in the same number of balls. Wolvaardt and Brits remained unbeaten on 59 and 57 respectively as they took their side across the line in 17.5 overs.

Earlier, the West Indies Women were asked to bat first. They got off to a shaky start as openers Hayley Matthews (10) and Qiana Joseph (4) fell inside the powerplay. Deandra Dottin came out all guns blazing before getting removed by Marizanne Kapp on 13. Stafanie Taylor along with Shemaine Campbelle led the recovery work before the latter fell on 17.

Taylor kept going strong but failed to get any support from the other end as the Caribbean side kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Taylor (44*) and Zaida James (15*) stitched a 35-run stand at the back end of the innings which helped their side get to a respectable total. The West Indies Women finished their innings on 118/6.

Nonkululeko Mlaba was the standout bowler for the Proteas Women. She picked up four wickets, conceding 29 runs in her four overs. Marizanne Kapp also bowled a brilliant spell and registered figures of 2/14 in her four overs. Skipper Wolvaardt and Brits then chased down the total with 13 balls to spare to start the competition on a winning note.

Stick around for the post-match presentation.
