That is the end of our live coverage as well. St Lucia Kings became the first finalist of CPL 2024. They have few days and will eagerly wait for their opponents, which will be determined by Qualifier 2, where Guyana Amazon Warriors and Barbados Royals will face off.
For now, this is me AkshayaKrishna Polya, signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Ajay Pal Singh and scorer/analyst Ghanendra Singh Thakur, who brought you all the live action of this enthralling fixture. We will meet again. Until then, its cheers!
Faf du Plessis (St Lucia Kings Captain): "Yeah, it was a controversial decision at the toss because the guys were talking about the dew. In the playoffs and knockouts, its good to have runs on the board.
It was an incredible start from Charles. The start set us up for a good score. It was a great innings from Charles.
We have been consistent for a few years now. It has been a good batting partnership with him (Charles). The most impressive thing about Charles is he has worked hard on his game. He always had the ability to take down the seamers. But now, he has improved his game against spin.
It was an excellent batting effort to get 198 on that surface. We are a team that has adapted well wherever we have played. Baring a couple of games at home, where we were not up to the mark, we have done well in this season.
I think we have lost the toss most of the times, but we have done something different. For me it's a good sign as a team. We have found ways to win games from different situations. We haven't always had the rub of the green, but we have found ways to win the game.
I remember I was injured just before the final a couple of years ago. It was a big loss for us. Losing a batter is always a big drawback for any team and that too ahead of the final. Losing the captain just adds more disappointment. But Fletcher did well to come into the side and lead. It was a last-ball finish in that game; we have set some high goals for ourselves this season. Looking forward to the final."
Imran Tahir (Guyana Amazon Warriors Captain): "Yeah look, it was still not a good position to be in. They put a good total on the board. I think we let ourselves down in powerplay. We were behind the game, we came back well to restrict them to 198. A good effort by the bowlers in the end. We are now looking for another challenge.
Yeah look you can say that, we are trying different options at the top (on not having a fixed opening combination). Keemo got unlucky, it could have gone for six or a boundary. We may get a new opener for you in the next game.
I felt there were two right handers in the middle, it might be tough for him (Moeen Ali) to bowl to them with the wet ball. But we had to throw the ball to him and he did well for us.
We are the home team and should have used the conditions well. But hopefully, we will comeback well against Barbados Royals and don't let our fans down."
Johnson Charles (Player of the Match): "It is all about being positive, having that intent. I have been dismissed the most by left-arm spinner. But you have to find a way to be positive and give the team a good start.
It is about staying with the pace of the game. I have been practicing different ways of scoring runs.
It is positive intent and knowing your strength. We feed off each other's energy. This means a lot. So many years, we have been trying. I feel this year, is our year.
I feel we have a good chance and we can win it this year."
Player of the Match: Johnson Charles
8:46 AM IST and 11:16 PM Local Time: The rain has the final say in Guyana as St Lucia Kings win Qualifier 1 by 15 runs on the DLS method and cruise to the final. Guyana Amazon Warriors will now take on Barbados Royals in Qualifier 2.
Earlier in the game, St Lucia Kings won the toss and opted to bat first. Openers Johnson Charles (79 off 45) and Faf du Plessis (57 off 36) went berserk right from the get-go to hammer 124 for the first wicket in a quick time. The platform was set for the Kings’ middle order, but Guyana Amazon Warriors pulled things back nicely to stop the visitors from surpassing the magic number of 200. But still, a few handy contributions from Roston Chase (18 off 17), Tim Seifert (18 off 11) and David Wiese (13* off 7) helped the St Lucia-based franchise post 198/5 in 20 overs.
It was Moeen Ali (2/24) who turned things around with an excellent spell and also provided Guyana with the first breakthrough, dismissing the dangerous Charles in the 12th over. Though he was asked to bowl very late in the innings, the England spinner did a fantastic job. Dwaine Pretorius (2/51) also picked up two wickets but was very expensive. Shamar Joseph (1/28) was the other wicket-taker for Guyana, while Gudakesh Motie, Imran Tahir and Romario Shepherd returned wicketless.
Guyana changed the batting order and sent Keemo Paul to open with Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Paul (14 off 15) didn’t look settled in the middle and became Alzarri Joseph’s (1/9) prey in the 4th over, which was a wicket maiden. Gurbaz (24 off 18) was taken care of by David Wiese (1/3), while Shai Hope (27 off 22) perished after the drinks break in the bowling Roston Chase (1/31) before Noor Ahmad (1/35) castled Pretorius for 2 with an exceptional leg break to reduce the defending champions to 4/77 in 11.1 overs.
Guyana were behind on the DLS par score with the drizzle entering the fray. The man in form,Shimron Hetmyer (37* off 18) took the responsibility and hit four maximums in quick succession to keep his side in the race. When the rain got heavier and players were taken off the field, Guyana Amazon Warriors were at 106/4 in 13 overs and were 15 runs behind on the DLS score.
The rain did stop, but it consumed one hour of buffer time. The match officials decided to call off the game with around 10 minutes to go for the cut-off time, which meant that the Kings won the fixture on the DLS method and booked a spot in the grand final!
Stay tuned for the post-match presentations...
