So, despite Trinbago Knight Riders bashing Guyana Amazon Warriors, the latter stay at the top. It was TKR who defeated Guyana the last time in the season and again it was the four-time champions who halted the winning streak of the defending champions, completing a league double over the Imran Tahir-led side.
For now, this is me, AkshayaKrishna Polya, signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Ajay Pal Singh and scorer/analyst Dushyant Madhukar Kumar, who brought you all the live-action of this fixture. We will meet again. Until then, its cheers!
Kieron Pollard (Trinbago Knight Riders Captain): "Good game of cricket. Won the toss and batted first. We just wanted to continue to be smart. These things happen. Not just Charles, we dropped David Miller last game. These things happen. You have to be better than that.
Again, the importance of the match is there. It is not an excuse or anything. Main thing is to win the cricket match. We wanted to fight and see if we can qualify in the top two but some things are destined.
He (Nicholas Pooran) played well for us even last year. He has been getting a lot of starts. It can be difficult when you are getting starts and not turning it into a big one. Glad it came off for him tonight.
This is the opportunity, if you make a mistake, you are out. We have a lot of experience in that dressing room and hopefully we will be able to execute our plans well here in the next game."
Imran Tahir (Guyana Amazon Warriors Captain): "It is belief and fighting. We knew what we needed to get. We were soft in the middle. We did not start well with the ball. We have a lot of positives to take from the game. Bravery is one thing.
We wanted the players to play with freedom. We finished at the top, which we wanted. I truly believe we deserved it. We are playing really well. If we lost today, I would have pulled my hair. I am looking forward to the playoffs.
We are a team that looks to do different things; we wanted to see how seam bowling goes in the powerplay. Pooran played a special innings. As I said, we were a little soft. We have to be harder, look to improve and come back stronger.
We had a great start; they bowled well, there were so many soft dismissals, and there were so many things to think about. The pitch, to be honest, was good.
TKR are a good team; we wanted to win, they wanted to win, and they played better than us and deserved to win. We will fight until the end, and I guess it should be a good game against the Kings in Qualifier."
Nicholas Pooran (Player of the Match): "It is my responsibility to score runs and being fearless. I have worked on my execution and matchups.
I just love batting here. I played here for Guyana for two years. I don't want to be in a negative space. If the pitch keeps low and turns, I just want to play my game.
Definitely a good one, getting two 90s in the tournament this year. Getting any century is special."
Player of the Match: Nicholas Pooran
8:09 AM IST and 22:29 Local Time: Four-time champions Trinbago Knight Riders annihilate the defending champions Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final league fixture to show who the boss of the competition is with a 74-run thumping victory! But Guyana have ensured a top finish on net run rate and kept the Knight Riders in third place. The former will face St Lucia Kings in Qualifier 1, while the latter will play Barbados Royals in Eliminator!
Earlier in the fixture, Trinbago Knight Riders won the toss and decided to bat first. Imran Tahir knocked over Shaqkere Parris in the opening over before Nicholas Pooran turned things around with a whirlwind knock. Pooran (101 off 59) slammed his 3rd CPL century and added 152-run for the second wicket alongside Jason Roy (34 off 26), who played the second fiddle in the partnership.
Shamar Joseph (3/50) picked up three wickets in the back end of the innings, but the cameos from Kieron Pollard (19* off 13) and Keacy Carty (27* off 13) ensured that TKR got to a massive 211/5 in 20 overs. Tahir (1/29) and Dwaine Pretorius (1/33) were the other wicket takers for Guyana.
Chasing 212 to win, Guyana Amazon Warriors were rocked hard early with opener Kelvon Anderson being trapped in front in the second over to Nathan Edward but Rahmanullah Gurbaz (36 off 22) and Shai Hope (28 off 19) hammered TKR bowlers in the powerplay, adding 58 runs for the second wicket. Hope smashed Andre Russell for 26 runs in the final over of the field restrictions and got some momentum in the chase.
Once Akeal Hosein (1/24) trapped Hope in front of the stumps, things turned around dramatically in favour of the Knight Riders. Waqar Salamkheil (3/26) and Terrance Hinds (3/17) ran through the Guyana batting line-up for fun and got wickets at regular intervals.
Gudakesh Motie (26* off 28) and Imran Tahir (20 off 20) showed a great fight and kept ticking the scoreboard and got past 104 and 114 run marks which decided their fate of finishing in the top two and top, respectively. Guyana did well to reach 137 after being reduced to 88/8 at one stage. TKR would be fuming at themselves for dropping three catches of Motie, which could have helped them dethrone Guyana from the top spot.
Nathan Edward (3/19) broke the frustrating 9th wicket stand of 49 runs by dismissing the opposition skipper Tahir in the penultimate over before knocking over Joseph to put a full stop to the fixture!
W BOWLED'EM!!!! That's the game. Around the wicket. Edward nails the yorker at the off stump. Too good for Joseph who fails to get his bat down in time and the ball cannons into the off stump. TKR win by 74 runs but the happier side after this game would be Guyana Amazon Warriors.
Shamar Joseph is the last man in for the defending champions.
Finally, TKR manage to break this frustrating partnership. Tahir finds Carty at backward point. 9th one goes down for the Amazon Warriors.
18.4 N Edward to I Tahir
W WICKET!!!!!! Tahir chips it straight to Keacy Carty. Length ball outside off. Tahir squats and cuts but fails to keep it down. It goes straight to Keacy Carty at backward point, who dives and takes it inches above the ground.
18.3 N Edward to G Motie
1lb Full and on the pads. Motie misses the flick onto his front pad and scampers through for a leg bye.
18.2 N Edward to I Tahir
1 Length ball on the pads. Tahir tucks it to short mid wicket for a single.
