That's it from the coverage of this game. Both teams will be back in action at the same venue on Sunday and at the same time. Do join us for that clash and stay tuned for more cricketing actions across the globe and across formats in our network.
For now, this is Ayan Chatterjee signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Ajay Pal Singh alongside scorer/analyst Vishnu Verma. Stay safe, happy, and cool. Goodnight and CHEERS!
Alyssa Healy (Australia Women Captain): "Yeah, we will take that. A bit of chaotic but nice start to the summer. She (Phoebe Litchfield) is difficult to stop as she plays 360. Unbelievably blessed with so many great players.
Probably look at our dismissals and be better in the next game."
Suzie Bates (New Zealand Women Captain): "We got a good start. But then we had partnerships with Maddy Green and Litchfield played an extraordinary innings to win the game and get over the line for them. We need to bowl and bat a bit better than before and iron out the areas that we are lacking and lacked today. Plenty of positives today and we are in for the fight on Sunday against the Aussies."
Phoebe Litchfield (Player of the Match): Awesome to get the win today. Yeah, it was so nice to come here and the crowd was great. Coming to the country - I am a country girl myself - it is good to hear the crowd scream out our name.
Just added a few more shots to my repertoire, trying to pierce the field, I can look like an idiot sometimes, but good when they come off.
So nice to be playing for Australia, excited for my first world event (T20 World Cup). So excited about it."
Player of the Match: Phoebe Litchfield
5:54 PM IST, 10:24 PM Local Time: So, we have had a good game today where both teams fought hard, but in the end, Australia with a lot of depth in their squad got over the line by 5 wickets with 8 balls left to take a 1-0 lead in the 3-match T20I series,. New Zealand fought hard but were second best on the day.
Chasing 144 for the win, Australia Women lost Beth Mooney for 13. Captain Alyssa Healy scratched around for her 17 off 18 balls as it was a laboured innings from her. But it was the Phoebe Litchfield show as she scored an unbeaten 64* off 43 balls in a partnership with Georgia Wareham who scored 26 off 20 balls to guide Australia past the finishing line after they were in a spot of bother in patches. Annabel Sutherland remained unbeaten on 4* in the end. 7 extras given by the fielding side.
Molly Penfold was the pick of the bowlers for the White Ferns picking up 2/24 in 4 overs. A wicket apiece for Leigh Kasperek, Lea Tahuhu, and Brooke Halliday. But it was not enough to stop the Aussies today.
Earlier in the game, New Zealand Women won the toss and elected to bat first. They lost Georgia Plimmer for 11 early. Amelia Kerr fell cheaply as well. Suzie Bates played well for her 33 off 27 balls. Maddy Green looked good for her 35 off 33 balls. Isabella Gaze made 11. Leigh Kasperek made 14 off 16 balls. Jess Kerr scored 11* off 10 balls in the end. 14 extras given by Australia Women as the White Ferns ended with 143/7 in 20 overs.
All the Australian bowlers that bowled got a wicket each. Sophie Molineux was the pick of them with 1/19 in 4 overs. Megan Schutt, Tayla Vlaeminck, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Wareham, and Heather Graham all picked one wicket apiece and kept New Zealand under 150 in the end.
So, Australia Women win this game by 5 wickets with 8 balls left to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Stay tuned for the presentations.
