Two back-to-back days of thrilling Test matches prove why it's the best format amidst the chatters about T20s and T10s. Yesterday in Centurion, South Africa became the first team to qualify for the WTC final of the 2023-25 cycle and will wait for their opposition patiently.
There were a lot of positives from the MCG Test for India and a lot of emotions flowing across all five days from both sides, but at the end of it all, we see Australia putting another step closer to retaining the WTC. Still, there is a long way to go. India can only level the series now, but that will be enough to retain the BGT yet again. Cummins and Australia badly want to avenge their consecutive series losses at home and regain the coveted silverware.
Both teams know that there is a massive gap between Bumrah and the rest of the world. He is a champion and single-handedly carried this Indian side in this series. You have to feel for him. He has picked up 30 wickets and has been a level above the rest. He is a national treasure, and when he doesn't take the field, kindly keep him in a locker.
The fifth and final Test of the series will be played from January 3-7 at SCG, which is famously called the New Year's Test. Rohit Sharma and his men have to win it and level the series to retain the BGT and have some hope of qualifying for the third consecutive WTC final. Can Indian management make brave decisions for the series decider? Only time will tell...
For now, it's me, AkshayaKrishna Polya, signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Pritam Dey and scorer/analyst Bishal Mandal, who brought you all the live action of this mouth-watering final day's play from MCG. Stay tuned to our network for matches across the globe. We will meet again. Until then, it's cheers!
A picturesque cessation for 2024! Nothing better than a Boxing Day Test match in front of a record crowd at MCG with all five days of riveting battle between bat and ball. It's peak cinema when sides and the crowd get involved in banters and sledging.
Pat Cummins batted first; the debutant Sam Konstas showed no nerves and thrashed the world number one bowler Jasprit Bumrah to leave his mark in the international circuit at 19 years old. The top order set the foundation with half-centuries, Steven Smith notched up yet another century, and Cummins played a solid hand just to demolish the Indian attack, scoring a massive total.
Rohit Sharma opened the innings but to play a nothing shot in the second over. KL Rahl received a jaffa from the Australian captain before Jaiswal and Kohli took firm control of the proceedings, but the partnership ended abruptly, thanks to a miscommunication between the two well-set batters. India lost the plot late on Day 2 and succumbed deep into the ocean early on Day 3.
Things looked ominous for a huge innings deficit, but Nitish Kumar Reddy had other ideas. NKR took charge and clubbed an emotional maiden Test hundred to keep India in the contest, along with solid support from Washington Sundar.
Indian bowling attack came up with better venom on Day 4 and had a golden chance to fold the hosts for a low score when Bumrah was on a roll. Australia were 91/6 when Bumrah and Siraj were bowling bullets, but Marnus Labuschagne and Cummins weathered the storm before the last-wicket pair of Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland frustrated India and pushed them to the limits at the end of Day 4.
Bumrah redeemed himself for his only mistake of the match and bagged a fifer early on Day 5 before India's top-order apart from Jaiswal threw their wickets away. The way Pant and Jaiswal batted in the second session gave India a big hope, but Australia made their moves under the clever leadership of Cummins in the final session to sit on top of India once the tourists' gloveman made a big error of going for the big shot.
Rohit Sharma has failed to win a single Test match as captain in the last six matches. The best effort was in the previous Test at the Gabba, when India managed to draw the third match of the series with a good amount of help from rain.
Most Single Digit Dismissals for India in 2024:
16 - Rohit Sharma
15 - Virat Kohli
12 - Jasprit Bumrah
10 - Ravi Ashwin
The two senior pros have been way below par this year in the purest format of the game 👇
