1:47 AM IST, 9:17 PM Local Time: That's it. Somerset, the defending champions, start their title-defence on a winning note. A convincing victory for them tonight in front of their home crowd as they beat the Essex Eagles by four wickets with five balls to spare. All smiles in the Somerset camp as they start their Vitality T20 Blast 2024 campaign with a win. Essex, meanwhile, lose two games in a row and need to get back to the drawing board quickly.
Tom Banton and Will Smeed opened the batting for Somerset as they were chasing 194. Both played some lovely strokes upfront and put 49 for the opening wicket before Banton fell on 21. Smeed scored a quickfire 16-ball 39 before getting dismissed in the last over of the powerplay. Tom Kohler-Cadmore fell cheaply on one. Tom Abell along with Sean Dickson led the recovery work for Somerset.
The Essex spinners put a squeeze in the middle overs and the required run rate climbed to 11. Dickson holed out in the deep on 26 while trying to up the ante. Skipper Lewis Gregory walked out to bat and changed the whole complexion of the game. He along with Abell stepped on the accelerator. Gregory hit some lusty blows and kept Essex at bay. Abell brought up a well-composed fifty.
Abell and Gregory put 60 between them before both fell in the penultimate over. Abell departed on 55 whereas Gregory got dismissed after scoring 44 off just 20 balls. Craig Overton hit the winning runs for Somerset as they beat Essex by four wickets with five balls to spare. The innings of Gregory proved to be the difference between both sides in the end. Aaron Beard and Paul Walter grabbed two wickets each for Essex but it wasn't enough as they failed to defend the total.
Earlier, Essex were asked to bat first and Adam Rossington along with Dean Elgar gave them a good start. Both put 67 for the first wicket before Rossington fell on 32. Jordan Cox provided a good support for Elgar who looked scratchy right from the start of his innings. Cox fell on 30 in the 15th over. Paul Walter played a good cameo of 18 off eight balls before getting cleaned up.
Elgar brought up his fifty but it wasn't a fluent innings as he failed to find the fence in the later stages. He scored 77 off 51 balls before getting dismissed in the last over. His knock however helped Essex get to 193 at the end of their 20 overs. Somerset picked up six wickets in total, with skipper Gregory leading from the front. He picked up three wickets and gave away 42 runs in his four overs. Roelof van der Merwe, Jake Ball and Ben Green also chipped in with a wicket each for the hosts.
19.1 D Sams to C Overton
4 FOUR!!! Overton smacks this one and Somerset are home with five balls to spare. Sams from over the wicket bowls it short on the stumps, Overton gets on top of his toes and pulls it powerfully in front of square in the leg side for a cracking boundary. With this, Somerset beat Essex by four wickets.
Somerset require 1 run from the final over.

18.6 P Walter to C Overton
1 Fuller delivery on the stumps, Overton pushes it off the inside half of the bat to deep square leg for a single.
W Spooned straight back to Walter. Gregory departs. Can you believe it? A very soft dismissal this one. Bowls it short on the stumps, Gregory hops and looks to work it into the leg side but closes his bat face early. He ends up spooning it straight back to Walter who completes a simple catch.
18.4 P Walter to L Gregory
4 FOUR!!! Smashed away for a boundary. Walter bowls a slower delivery into the pitch outside off, Gregory gives himself some room and slaps it straight down the ground past mid off for a cracking boundary.
18.3 P Walter to B Green
1 Length delivery outside off, Green cuts it to sweeper covers and opens his account with a single.
W Edged and gone. Walter bowls it fuller this time in the channel outside off, Abell plants his front leg and goes for an expansive drive through covers but gets an outside edge and Rossington behind the stumps takes a good low catch to his right. End of a fine knock from Abell.
18.1 P Walter to T Abell
2 Over the wicket, shorter in length outside off, Abell cuts it hard to the left of sweeper covers for a couple of runs.
