Player of the Match: Annabel Sutherland
Meg Lanning ( Melbourne Stars Women Captain):"Pretty stressful way to get the campaign underway, but I thought we fought really well. We obviously were reasonably happy with the score, but we probably thought we were still going to be under the pump, and then Ash and Brown batted extremely well to get them back in the game, but I guess it's when the sort of mindset flips to thinking they're supposed to win. I guess you get yourself into a good position, but maybe that brings us back into the game and we're able to take our opportunity.
I think it's going to be probably strange if there weren't. It's a long day waiting for a 7:40 night game that hasn't changed too much, but once I got out there, I just wanted to enjoy it and have fun.
I just want to shout out to Annabel Sutherland as well. I thought she was incredible, turned the game for us and yeah, she's a really important player for us, and looking forward to seeing her develop over the year. "
5:16 PM IST, 10:46 PM Local Time: What a terrific game we have had here at North Sydney Oval and in the end, it was the Melbourne Stars under Meg Lanning who held their nerves to win the game by a mere 2 runs and kickstart their campaign with a win. For the Sixers, it was a case of so near yet so far for them.
Chasing a tricky 166 for the win, the Sixers got off to a very bad start as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Alyssa Healy barely got to double figures. But amidst the chaos, the skipper for the night Ashleigh Gardner who stood tall and till she was there, the Sixers were in control of proceedings. Gardner scored 72off 44 balls but lost partners at the other end until she was joined by MaitlanBrown who scored a good 35 off 22 balls. The rest of the batting fell away as they ended with 163/9 in 20 overs. 14 extras were given by the fielding side.
Annabel Sutherland was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/27 in 4 overs including the wickets of Gardner and Brown in the 19th over. A wicket apiece for Kim Garth, Sophie Day, Illingworth, and McKenna. They did just enough and were well led by Meg Lanning.
Earlier in the game. Melbourne Stars Women were put into bat first by Sydney Sixers Women. Sophia Dunkley went for 10 runs. But skipper Meg Lanning returned with a bang as she scored a wonderful 55 off 34 balls.Alice Capsey scored 13 while Annabel Sutherland scored 34 off 22 balls. Bouchier scored 25 off 16 balls. Sasha Moloney got to double figures as she scored 10 off 5 balls. 3 extras given by the fielding side as Melbourne Stars Women ended with 165/8 in 20 overs.

1b That's it, Melbourne Stars Women held their nerve and win the match by just two runs. Full and way outside off. Smith missed it and ran a bye run but it was not enough as they lost the match by just 2 runs. Sutherland turned the tide of the game completely by removing both the set-batters in the penultimate over.
